Features & Capabilities

Root is a platform for communities to connect, collaborate, and grow. On desktop it's a full-featured command center; on mobile, it's the easiest way to stay in the loop—chatting, reacting, and coordinating from anywhere.

Designed for real communities, Root uses channels, roles, and permissions to structure your space. Switch between communities, join voice and video calls, filter notifications, and unlock apps like docs and tasks on desktop.

User Reviews

Root is a promising Discord-like app with a clean, user-friendly UI and good audio quality, plus strong privacy and migration from Discord. However, it suffers from reliability problems: notifications often don’t work, bugs and performance issues slow it down, and screen sharing/streaming quality is inconsistent. Feature parity gaps (video chat, moderation tools, reaction roles) and some login/auth issues are common. With ongoing development and a free feature set, it could become a strong alternative if stability and essential features are improved.
Pros
  • Discord-like, user-friendly UI that is easy to use and navigate across reviews.
  • Strong audio quality and clear voice in calls, often cited as better than Discord.
  • Privacy-focused and data-friendly approach with no mandatory nitro-style features; free basic features
  • Ability to migrate from Discord to Root using server templates for easy onboarding.
  • Active development with frequent updates and quick issue resolutions cited by users.
Cons
  • Notable issues with notifications not working reliably across devices and contexts.
  • Bugs, crashes, and overall performance instability; app can feel slow or clunky at times.
  • Screen sharing/streaming quality and control problems; interruptions during calls and limited control over streams.
  • Missing essential features compared to Discord (e.g., video chat, voice settings, moderation tools, reaction roles) and several feature gaps.
  • Login/signup issues and occasional account-related problems (e.g., random logouts, email/username/login glitches).

I literally use this every day now and the apps are a new idea overall and theres no builtin AI features which I love! ^^

Glitchy, drops calls randomly, and sometimes can’t join a call.

I heavily enjoy the app since everything is quite simple and not to bad to navigate but I do wish special characters could be used in channel names like these ꧁ I think it adds nice decor, also the banner for accounts often squish the image I'm using or just look off. Everything else is great though ^_^
