Tin Can - Companion App

By: Tin Can
The new "landline" for friends

Features & Capabilities

Tin Can is a screen-free kid phone on Wi‑Fi that only calls approved contacts. No apps. No strangers. No doom scrolling. It’s about grandparent chats, playdate plans, and 'Can I stay five more minutes?' calls.

The Tin Can companion app gives parents (and only parents) behind-the-scenes control: approve who can call (and who can be called), set call hours, see call history, share your Tin Can with trusted friends, and manage multiple cans from one place.

User Reviews

Reviews praise Tin Can for its charming concept, easy setup, kid-friendly use, and responsive support. However, recurring issues harm usability: repeated login failures, app crashes, and server outages during high traffic, plus unreliable calls and contact syncing. When the system is working, it delivers a positive, family-oriented experience, but persistent software reliability and connectivity problems limit its effectiveness.
Pros
  • Easy to set up / onboarding is straightforward
  • Family-friendly and kid-focused experience (kids enjoy calling relatives)
  • Visually appealing hardware and app design with a cute concept
  • Responsive customer support, especially during holiday peak times
  • When functioning, the phone/app delivers the intended positive experience for families
Cons
  • Frequent login/authentication problems (login button unresponsive, failure to log in)
  • App instability and crashes, notably when managing contacts or during heavy use
  • Server connectivity issues and outages during peak times (e.g., Christmas surge)
  • Inconsistent call quality and reliability (calls spotty or sometimes don’t connect)
  • Contact import/sync problems (importing or saving contacts often fails)

Concept is cute, terrible quality, can’t even use. Can barely hear, constant feedback and echoing. Fighting with customer service to get my money back

I feel like I'm paying for a cheap plastic phone that's not comfortable to dial on nor operates like a POTS phone we've seen in the last 20 years but instead it's own brand of weird and cheap. The service feels silly. I like not getting spam calls but my word is adding contacts tedious. I'm certainly not going to hand over my contacts either; can't say I trust most companies these days with my digital data. Also, it's yet another company with AI support that just feels so clunky not to mention more anti-labor, late-stage capitalist garbage. It's a sign of how much you respect your bottom line over real customer service IMO

Tried for over 45 minutes to get the thing to work. All Bluetooth, WIFI, and prompts appeared to work and then ultimately we keep getting a network error. The FAQs all reference known errors that they are working on with no fixes.
