However, the experience is heavily marred by excessive, intrusive ads that disrupt play and are hard to remove, plus startup fullscreen ads. Some players also report crashes and balance issues where enemy strength scales with upgrades, reducing satisfaction from progression. If ads and stability were improved, the game could receive much higher ratings.

Ads appear at startup and as fullscreen distractions (e.g., a Chrome ad), disrupting the launch experience.
Stability and bugs (tends to crash during runs; occasional glitches) disrupt progression.
Balance issue where enemies scale with upgrades, diminishing the sense of progression from leveling up.

Unfortunately, this game has an adaptive scaling that ends up hurting progress and leads to frustration. The more you upgrade the harder the enemy health is. Leading to pointless upgrades and a seeming endless dark tunnel. In order to make the game playable, we should be able to upgrade without the penalty of having the enemy upgrade on the same level as well. Should be simple, each level is harder, and you get rewarded for going up through purchasing upgrades.

I would give this more stars, but the constant interruptions in game flow, including to play ads in the middle of a level, makes this game a pain.

There’s a certain purity of design in space shooters like Neon Wings. They can be as abstract as needed in the service of gameplay. Busting asteroids with missiles and lasers? Sure. A spaceship that can swing a sword? Also good. The glowing vector graphics fit the bill, and the music is fantastic. You typically pick 10 or more upgrades during a single run, and it’s great fun exploring how these can change up how you play and how they interact with each other. This was worth the premium price to enjoy fully without ads.
