User Reviews
Pros
- Local/offline AI models support enabling private, cloud-free transcription
- Custom prompts and multi-model selection for precise output control
- Full app with features beyond a dictation keyboard (APIs, prompts, integrations)
- Strong Mac performance and real-time transcription on macOS/Apple Silicon
- Competitive pricing with accessible local-use options and flexible usage
Cons
- iOS reliability issues: keyboard switching and unreliable dictation on iPhone, sometimes unusable
- Pricing structure concerns: subscription requirements for online features and perceived high cost for casual/local use
- Some local models fail or truncate results, reducing reliability of offline mode
- Mobile input flow quirks and activation bugs (mic/recording issues and app-focus problems)

Coming from Wispr flow and like Spokenly but if you don’t keep the mic on, anytime you try to use voice to text it opens the Spokenly and you have to go back to the app you want to use. If you keep the mic on it uses battery and the mic indicator stays on. Wispr Flow doesn’t seem to suffer from this.

Spokenly is one of the few speech-to-text apps on the App Store that handles AI transcription fairly. Its BYOK options are free, and so is local processing. If you pay Spokenly, it’s either out of gratitude or because you’ve chosen to have them process your voice on their own hardware. Most competitors don’t offer that choice, and next to Spokenly they look extractive and predatory.
As a sidenote: If you go the BYOK route, use Groq. The free tier allows 2,000 transcription requests and eight hours of audio per day, which is far more than one person will use dictating texts and longer messages. Free tiers don’t stay this generous forever, so take advantage of it.
Overall, I highly recommend Spokenly and feel like the team running this all deserves all the recognition. 5/5
