User Reviews

Users love Allspice for easily importing recipes from social media and keeping a centralized pantry/grocery list. The free version is usable, and organization features are strong. However, the homepage is cluttered with onboarding prompts and an AI banner, and editing imported recipes is buggy with limitations. Some reviews also cite unclear free vs premium terms and external-site steps, plus potential ads.
Pros
  • Import recipes from social media into a centralized collection.
  • Pantry tracking and grocery list integration that updates quantities as recipes are made.
  • Free version is usable and not pushy about upgrades.
  • Organized storage with folders/categories for easy access.
Cons
  • Homepage clutter and onboarding prompts including an AI assistant banner.
  • Editing imported recipes is buggy; issues with editing ingredients (duplicates not supported) and steps sometimes being hidden behind external sites.
  • Confusion about free vs premium terms and potential import limits.

EDIT: I’ve updated my review from 3 to 4 stars. I will use it more often and update again with more details! But I highly recommend everyone giving it a download if you’re looking for a way to import and store recipes! I initially had some issues with the app, and I’m very impressed with the developer’s response to critique and fast update to reflect their promises! They addressed several of my concerns and opening the app again I was immediately so much more interested in continuing to use the app. I’ve had good experiences with the import recipe feature and now it’s all on my homepage for easy reference without having to scroll around through features that didn’t interest me. There is also much more clarity on what comes with the premium version/what is free. I’m happy to say that it is a very usable free app and so far do not feel pushed to upgrade. I might do so in the future since tracking my macros is appealing - my lifestyle just doesn’t need it at the moment. I’m keeping my previous notes because I think the way they responded was commendable & it highlights why we should support indie developers! Previous review: I downloaded this because the creator is on Reddit talking about how the app is mostly free with just a few upgradable features like tracking macros/etc. I’m not sure if they changed their mind, but it says “Import unlimited recipes” as a feature for premium. So… there’s a limit? That’s not mostly free. I don’t even know the limit - a little transparency would be nice. The homepage is a mess and makes me not want to use the app. First of all, there’s a banner up advertising a future AI Personal Assistant. Not only do I have zero interest in using an assistant, but it’s not even usable right now! So why is the banner taking up so much space? I hope they include a way to “close this option and not bring it back unless I ask” feature. The homepage also has a million things it wants you to “start.” Like it’s in tutorial mode. But it’s asking me to do all these things I have no interest in using the app for (import recipe from text, start a cookbook for example.) it’s taking up all this space for nothing. I wish there was a way to end tutorial mode or close out of these. When I open an app I want to get to what I came there for an not be overloaded by it basically begging me to try new features. Idk, I was just really looking forward to downloading this after seeing the creator boast about it on Reddit. So to open it up and be inundated with tutorials for simple tasks, unwanted AI chats, and unclear expectations for the free vs premium versions (and to be clear - I have no problem paying for apps and supporting creators. But I need to know that the additional features are actually worth it and I certainly don’t want to pay for an AI analysis of recipes - especially if I can’t opt out of seeing it or unnecessarily generating things I don’t need.) I’ll give it a few more days and adjust my review if needed. But in the meantime I’m going to keep an eye out for a simple recipe app that just lets me import and view my recipes. That’s literally all I’m asking for lol.
