Catching and Collecting Forest

Features & Capabilities

PlanetsTokyo's CollectingForest is a smartphone companion for the exhibition piece 'Catching and Collecting Extinct Forest' at teamLab Planets TOKYO. Point your camera to catch animals with the Research Eye and set up a Research Net. Captured animals appear in an illustrated collection book within the app.

With CollectingForest, you can release captured animals to a location visible through the camera, expanding your exploration of the forest. The more animals you catch, the more detailed information is added to your collection via Research, blending art, interactivity, and education for visitors of all ages.

User Reviews

Reviews largely describe the app as unreliable and glitchy, with frequent crashes, recognition failures, and freezing that disrupt the exhibit experience. A few mentions praise the venue and concept, and some see potential educational value if the app functioned properly. Overall, the app is the main negative factor, with limited recurring positive feedback.
Pros
  • The exhibit/venue is visually beautiful and the overall concept is appealing.
  • The app has potential to enhance learning when it works.
  • When functioning, the app can engage users with information about species.
Cons
  • The app is frequently glitchy and unreliable, including key errors.
  • The app often freezes or experiences slow internet, disrupting the experience.
  • Target recognition is inconsistent: aiming at animals may fail to register while occasional random hits occur when aiming at empty space.
  • The app ruins the experience for many users and distracts from learning.

literally didn’t work very inconsistent or just glitches out and breaks

The exhibit itself is beautiful, and the overall concept is very cool. I won’t spoil any more than necessary. The app is obnoxious and ruins the experience. I’m spending time in the exhibit writing a one star review instead of enjoying it, in hopes that teamLab will take feedback and improve the experience for others. First, catching animals on the floor is near impossible, so I gave up and learned nothing about those species. Second, the requirement to catch three of each species to unlock the entire ecology card is wholly unnecessary. There are 87 species in the exhibit. It would take several hours to make all 261 catches. That’s only if you don’t catch duplicates, which is impossible because many times the animals are layered and the arrow will hit a different target than the silhouette on your screen. This exhibit would be amazing if you could simply point the camera and read the species card. Because of this app, the educational component a massive time waster.
