User Reviews

Users praise Puzzmo for its broad puzzle library and especially crosswords, highlighting fun, varied puzzles and social play. However, they heavily criticize the business model (paywall and daily cap) and the extensive paywall on content, along with UI/UX and accessibility issues and intrusive ads. The chess mode is also seen as too hard without difficulty options. Despite these, many still value daily engagement and the responsive, feedback-driven development.
Pros
  • Wide variety of puzzles and games across the library, with strong crosswords.
  • Crosswords are notably excellent and a highlight of the app.
  • Fun, engaging daily puzzles with social play—you can do puzzles with friends or roommates.
  • The puzzles are well-designed and the dev team appears responsive to community feedback.
Cons
  • Paywall and daily puzzle cap lock many puzzles behind a subscription.
  • A large portion of content has become paywalled, reducing free access.
  • UI/UX can be confusing and cluttered, with small tablet puzzles and no zoom support.
  • Ads can be intrusive, appearing mid-game or blocking the UI.
  • Chess mode is frustrating and lacks adjustable difficulty settings.

Most of the negative reviews are because people have experienced the Puzzmo paywall that shows after you play 150 games. I will address that further down. Zooming out and looking at Puzzmo holistically it’s an incredible puzzle and game platform. Easily the best game platform for word lovers that I’ve encountered. The creators are super intentional about the games that they have created to make them challenging enough but fun without using cheap UX tactics that make them addicting or make you pay a ton of money. And honestly, I think that they have accomplished this. I love that they have explanations after each crossword and circuits game. Their newsletter is also very communicative and gives you insight into how the people at Puzzmo think behind the scenes when they’re constructing games for us to enjoy. The Discord community is super active as well. Do I recommend Puzzmo? Absolutely! Now, to address the issue that most of the negative have been left about: the paywall. After you have played 150 games, Puzzmo restricts your account to only have access to 4 games (the crossword puzzles, circuits, and flip art). The logic behind this (i assume) is that you have had a plethora of opportunities to experience what the games are like and obviously them, so please pay to continue. We can debate on whether or not this is the right approach for a company that needs to generate revenue, but I won’t in this review. The issue is that this is not communicated anywhere so it’s sprung upon you as a surprise. For a company that is ordinarily pretty communicative, it feels irritating. I think Puzzmo should change this by communicating up front and showing how many games you have left in a clear way. I was upset when I saw this cause it was a surprise and not the good kind. But if you are in the US, your local library likely grant you access to a paid Puzzmo subscription through their partnership with Hoopla. You do have to “renew” it every week, but you keep your account and stats. So you can still access Puzzmo for free and play as many puzzles as you want! I’m a student who can’t afford the sub right now so this is a lifesaver. To wrap this up, Puzzmo is a great company AND they really should address the negative feedback in these reviews because a 3.9 is not reflective of the score. The app should have more like 4.8-4.9 stars tbh. This review was written by a real human without the use of generative AI. So it’s not that polished and might be slightly rambly, but it’s authentic and I stand by it. 😊

This game was good for a few months, but now rather than being able to play 5-6 puzzles/games for free or as a subscriber, they suddenly changed to one puzzle a day unless you pay for membership. Not sure why they had to ruin the experience that way. Sad to delete.

Please ban those stupid Pepsi adds that cover over your entire UI. I can’t play circuits without a non X-able cherry Pepsi ad blocks the entire keyboard. Great app but do better.
