Features & Capabilities

Deflection is a powerful calculator for beams, 2D frames, and 2D trusses with an intuitive editor and advanced graphical output. It shows reactions, shear, bending moment, and deflection, plus internal stresses along the cross section and beam.

The integrated 2D frame/truss editor lets you draw structures, apply loads, and visualize results directly, with optional deep insights for selected beams. The cross-section editor automatically computes moment of inertia and area, while the built-in data library, self-weight option, unlimited design files, and templates simplify design workflows.

User Reviews

Deflection is praised for accurate beam calculations, a visually attractive and intuitive interface, and strong utility for engineers as a quick sanity check and design aid. Users repeatedly highlight its site/offices usability, clear diagrams, and its status as an essential tool. However, main drawbacks cited are an awkward UI with limited input options, missing core features (save/undo/redo, help/tutorial), a small material/section library (36 ksi steel, no aluminum, no custom shapes), and several reliability issues (calculation bugs, unit persistence, and input limits).
Pros
  • Accurate calculations and reliable sanity checks for beam design.
  • Intuitive, visually rich interface with helpful diagrams.
  • Compact and practical for on-site and office use.
  • Highly regarded by engineers; considered essential and among the best structural design apps.
  • Excellent graphics with the ability to specify beam shapes and quickly adjust scenarios.
Cons
  • Clunky interface and calculator layout; no scientific notation input.
  • Lacks essential features: no save/load, undo/redo, or in-app help/tutorial; no support for saving work or custom beam sections.
  • Limited material/section library (e.g., steels capped at 36 ksi; no aluminum; no user-defined shapes).
  • Notes of bugs and reliability issues: incorrect theta output, settings revert to metric, and a 10x length limitation.

Would be great if there’s an option for different EI at different span.
