User Reviews

Leonardo is praised as a powerful, lightweight, layer-based editor for iPad with strong value and intuitive UI, ideal for thumbnails and professional edits. Yet it suffers from recurring bugs, unstable exports, and unreliable layer handling, plus missing color-picker tools and a cap on layers. Lack of ongoing updates for newer devices further challenges reliability. Overall, it’s beloved when it works, but reliability and feature gaps limit long-term use.
Pros
  • Powerful layer-based editing with professional tools (layers, masks, effects, selections)
  • Lightweight and fast with a small footprint on iPad
  • Excellent value and free or low-cost given the features offered
  • Intuitive, straightforward UI suitable for both simple edits and complex composites
  • Great for thumbnails, overlays, and background work, often praised as a desktop-grade editor on iPad
Cons
  • Bugs and instability across editing, saving, and exporting (glitches, misrendered previews)
  • Merge Down and layer-management functions are unreliable or broken
  • Export/output quality often degrades (blur or low resolution on save)
  • Not updated for current iOS devices; limited ongoing development and compatibility issues
  • Missing essential color tools like an eye dropper/color picker and limited number of layers

Been using it for nearly ten years now, not even joking. It’s my best kept secret - so powerful yet lightweight - and for free. The only thing I wish it had was a color picker. Aside from that, however, I have nothing but praise.

This app is absolutely legendary, and I use it for all of my photo editing. I create video thumbnails and all of my graphics using this, and I can avoid more expensive and complex editing softwares because this app has everything that I need
