Features & Capabilities

Spalding TF DNA is a shooting analytics extension designed for serious basketball players. It records makes and misses and captures critical training data such as release time, release angle, spin rate, shot consistency, and shot situations (off-the-dribble, off-the-pass, or relaxed like a free throw).

With HealthKit for height and a valid Spalding TF DNA subscription plus an official TF DNA smart basketball, the extension helps you measure progress, visualize improvements, and tailor practice to raise your shooting percentage. The ball is available in sizes 6 and 7 and can be ordered on the Spalding website.

User Reviews

Overall, users praise Spalding TF DNA for accurate shot tracking and useful analytics, but frequent counting and connectivity issues and high cost are the main drawbacks. Requests for features like shot maps, Apple Watch support, and data export appear as potential improvements.
Pros
  • Very accurate shot tracking (distance, arc, spin) and makes/misses detection.
  • Valuable analytics: shooting percentage and actionable feedback to improve.
  • Fun, engaging practice experience with data-driven insights.
  • Good ball feel and reliable data when the device stays connected.
Cons
  • Counting inaccuracies, especially swishes being miscounted as misses or makes not counted.
  • Frequent connectivity and app reliability issues (disconnects, loading problems).
• High price and perceived low value, including expensive hardware/subscription and limited family-sharing options.

But this thing just does not keep track of your distance. I have measured multiple times on a Level court, and it still says the wrong distance, disappointed, but great for young learners

It’s a good idea to have a ball that tracks your shots but Spalding did it wrong, especially making it $250!!! It dribbles weird and kind of makes me shoot weird (to be fair I use it ouside but it still feels weird). Anyway, the app is the real thing I’m reviewing, and it is a whole other issue, it is an ok app and all but it is not worth $100 a year or whatever, unless you play tons of basketball, which I do and still think it’s not worth it. Don’t get me wrong the app itself is pretty good but it would be way cooler if there was an option to kind of 1v1 someone and see who can make more shots in a certain amount of time.

After a workout, please add a feature called shot map. It shows every shot you took, and where you took it from. If you click on a shot, it shows your release time, arc, and spin rate.
