Features & Capabilities

Spalding TF DNA is a shooting analytics extension designed for serious basketball players. It records makes and misses and captures critical training data such as release time, release angle, spin rate, shot consistency, and shot situations (off-the-dribble, off-the-pass, or relaxed like a free throw).

With HealthKit for height and a valid Spalding TF DNA subscription plus an official TF DNA smart basketball, the extension helps you measure progress, visualize improvements, and tailor practice to raise your shooting percentage. The ball is available in sizes 6 and 7 and can be ordered on the Spalding website.

User Reviews

Overall, users praise Spalding TF DNA for accurate shot tracking and useful analytics, but frequent counting and connectivity issues and high cost are the main drawbacks. Requests for features like shot maps, Apple Watch support, and data export appear as potential improvements.
Pros
  • Very accurate shot tracking (distance, arc, spin) and makes/misses detection.
  • Valuable analytics: shooting percentage and actionable feedback to improve.
  • Fun, engaging practice experience with data-driven insights.
  • Good ball feel and reliable data when the device stays connected.
Cons
  • Counting inaccuracies, especially swishes being miscounted as misses or makes not counted.
  • Frequent connectivity and app reliability issues (disconnects, loading problems).
• High price and perceived low value, including expensive hardware/subscription and limited family-sharing options.

Sometimes it counted misses and didn’t count makes it as well wasn’t saying it was a swish when it was a perfect swish and high arc and it said it was low arc. Overall, my son is doing good though it’s forcing him to go outside more and shoot hoops he’s at about 500 now

Very good app but could be better. I should be able to fully customize target spin rate and not have a min of 1.5. A lot of players shoot slightly lower and that’s ok. Also the audio feedback should give all 3 metrics not just one. If you are listening to ear buds while shooting it would be helpful to get all 3 so you don’t have to stop and look at the app. And have the option to get the actual value read. Not just too low. The app has so much potential though. If it could start to analyze makes and misses to find out the key variables. Like your spin rate doesn’t matter much but when your release time is faster it has a big improvement. Focus on that.
