Unedo: Spanish Games + Stories

I was excited when I first saw this ad on my social media, I needed short form content that I could read to pick up new vocabulary and phrases which this app did but I’m afraid my journey for the perfect language learning app continues. Since the app is marketed towards “no sabo kids” I really wish there was a customizable option to study regionally. My family is dominican and after weeks of using this app there have been 0 Dominican writers. Puerto Rico has been a rarity and is the only Caribbean island to get representation. Additionally, I don’t know why they feature so many Spanish writers when there is an endless amount of language learning resources for that dialect. This app should push for a broader Latino representation since Latin American countries are better represented here and geographically closer to the United States. Once again I am disappointed. I need an app that can teach me about culture through current news and national politics and that’s where a lot of these media centered apps fall flat. The articles published in this app are fluffy and often times lack depth and history. I love radio ambulante and the topics they explore but find their content hard to understand while I’m still learning. I think as an American, understanding the politics of Latin America is extremely necessary when trying to have a fuller language learning experience rich in culture. That aside, the design of the app is really beautiful and I did pick up some vocabulary in the few weeks I used it. Very boring though and hard to pick it up consistently.

A recent trip to Spain was illuminating for how it showed me the limitations of more gamified app-based learning and its AI underpinnings. Unedo offers an intuitive platform for intermediate students of Spanish who want to take their understanding further towards fluency, all while ingesting the cultural history of multiple continents, curated by actual people. Grateful to have found Unedo and made the switch!
