I just started using this and I’m not very good at remembering to do it every day but I hope to get better at that because it really is very easy to just click on the icon and talk about your day and then save it. It takes a fraction of the time to “write” about your entire day - so there’s no excuse to not do it every day.

Just what I needed, a simple app to record daily thoughts. The voice feature works great.

I started using Echo Journal in late summer during a genuinely difficult period of my life, and at first it was incredibly helpful. I don’t enjoy writing, and the voice transcription, reflections, and ability to look back on entries made this feel like something I could actually stick with. For a while, it mattered.
Unfortunately, reliability is everything in a journaling app—and Echo failed at the most basic level.
From early on, the app frequently wouldn’t start recording. I often had to force close and reopen it multiple times (sometimes up to ten) before it would actually capture audio. Annoying, but manageable.
What isn’t manageable is losing data. A few weeks ago, all of my entries disappeared. I later learned you’re apparently expected to export your data constantly. I assumed—reasonably—that an account-based, paid app would retain user data. As a result, I lost everything from September through January, which for me were the most important and meaningful months.
After a full week of reaching out to support, I received no response. At that point, cancelling my subscription and leaving this review felt like the only remaining option.
If you’re considering a journaling app, be aware that you are placing a lot of trust in how your data is handled. Echo did not earn that trust for me. I’ve since switched to Untold—it’s free and significantly more reliable.
This is disappointing more than anything else. When a journaling app works, it can really matter. When it doesn’t, the cost is much higher than just money.
