User Reviews

Hydra is praised as a strong Apollo-era Reddit client: ad-free, familiar UI, and features like reader mode for external links. Reviewers note solid performance and responsive developer support. However, heavy reliance on a paywall for core features (NSFW access, posting) and limited posting capabilities hurt usability. The app also faces stability issues (touch input problems, freezes, loading glitches) and occasional performance drawbacks (battery drain, PiP/video issues). Some updates add intrusive prompts. Overall, Hydra shows great potential but needs polish and pricing adjustments.
Pros
  • Ad-free experience with no ads throughout the app
  • Apollo-like, familiar Reddit browsing experience
  • External links open in reader mode for easier reading
  • Clean, intuitive layout and solid browsing performance
  • Responsive developer support and active iteration
Cons
  • Premium-only access blocks core features (NSFW content, posting, and some filters)
  • Posting or commenting is unreliable or unavailable in practice
  • Bugs and reliability issues (touch misreads, freezes, content loading problems)
  • Background performance problems (battery drain, video/audio issues, PiP problems)
  • Updates can introduce disruptive changes or prompts (subreddit join prompts) and overall polish concerns

I needed this app in my life so badly! Reddit app is absolute is infested with ads and privacy intruding trackers. After Apollo was forced to close, I found alternatives to the Reddit app by side-loading but it was never perfect and always buggy and had to re-login every time the app was closed. This is better than even the Apollo app for me. It’s been mostly bug-free but the app was released relatively recently so if you find a bug, just report it and move on. They do fix the bugs! I’ve noticed much less bugs than when the app first released. They’re doing a banger job!
