Overview

Features & Capabilities

iNaturalist Chrome extension provides AI-powered species suggestions by pointing your camera at plants, animals, and fungi, or by importing photos. It helps you learn about biodiversity, keeps a log of sightings, and fosters science contributions through a global community of nature enthusiasts.

Beyond AI identifications, observations are reviewed by real people and shared to support science and conservation. iNaturalist’s nonprofit mission is to connect people with nature and advance scientific knowledge.

User Reviews

Users praise iNaturalist for its educational value, community-based identifications, and features like batch uploads and maps. However, persistent performance issues on the newer app—freezes, lag, crashes, and upload failures—along with missing features, a confusing UI, and privacy concerns are frequently noted. The overall sentiment is that the app is valuable for learning and field use, but stability and feature parity with the Classic version remain major drawbacks.
Pros
  • Strong educational value and community-driven identifications that help users learn about species
  • Valuable identification capabilities and real-time data from a large, engaged community
  • Batch uploads feature and an easier-to-navigate interface compared to iNaturalist Classic
  • Access to profiles, range maps, and projects (e.g., state projects) for biodiversity data
  • Useful for field work and research; appreciated by ecologists and nature enthusiasts
Cons
  • Frequent freezing, lag, and crashes leading to unresponsive UI and upload failures
  • Uploads can fail or be slow; photos and IDs sometimes won't load correctly
  • New UI is buggy and missing or hard-to-use features (e.g., tagging location, direct messaging)
  • Privacy and data-tracking concerns with the newer app versus the older version
  • Inconsistent identification quality and over-reliance on AI IDs, reducing accuracy

They are using your uploaded pictures to train their AI model, google lens, and the defense departments probably anyone else who pays for the data too. I’m not training anyone’s computer program for them. Once a few people identify a species and it gets marked as research grade they start feeding it to the AI. Delete all your content then delete the app.

The old version, why weird in some ways, is still preferred. But they’ve clearly paid attention to feedback and are improving the app continuously, to benefit both the public use and scientific use. Uploading is now much better on this app, as is ID. I still use the old app for viewing my uploaded records (it’s easier to view more records at once cleanly), and definitely prefer the map of the old version. Hopefully the old map functionality is brought to the new one soon!!
