User Reviews

Users praise its simplicity, speed and value, with strong upscaling results when it works and batch processing as a time-saver. However, reliability is repeatedly criticized: frequent crashes/freezes at high resolutions, inconsistent quality improvements, unreliable in‑app purchases, and uneven 8K support.
Pros
  • Easy to use / simple UI
  • Fast upscaling thanks to hardware acceleration
  • Impressive upscaling results when it works
  • Batch processing saves time
  • Good value / affordable one-time purchase
Cons
  • Crashes and freezes during upscaling/export, especially at higher resolutions (4K/8K) and after payment
  • Quality gains are inconsistent; sometimes no noticeable improvement
  • In‑app purchase issues / upgrade activation problems; paying but upgrade not applying
  • 8K upscaling support unreliable or not consistently achievable

This app is very easy to use. I tried it out because my other app, the Open Source HandBrake have too many bells and whistles and I wanted something quick. Unfortunately, Unsqueeze have too many short comings, some of which are just unacceptable: 1. Not compatible with MacOS Quick Look feature; Quick Look offers a fast, full-size preview of nearly any kind of file without opening the file. 2. Unsqueeze is slower than Handbrake using MAC hardware encoding; 3. Unsqueeze does not handle any embedded chapter markers. They are all lost after the upscale encode. Too bad.

This app truly is a great upscaling App, but until recently 5/5/2025 I ran into an issue of upscaling video game recordings. I don’t know why but whenever I try to it cancels out and my phone vibrates like it’s “shaking its head no”. before this, I have had an issue with batch upscaling videos where they would duplicate instead of actually upscale as in I would have 17 or 18 video game clips for content, and after 6 of them, they would all duplicate and fill up those spots. I use this almost all the time whenever I make content because I think it makes the videos look great. I truly love this app. Developers, please get in contact with me. I also have a few ideas on options that you could add to the App!
