User Reviews

iago is praised for its engaging, game-like approach that makes Japanese learning fun and focused on speaking. Users enjoy short, motivating lessons, entertaining content, and rewards that help maintain a daily study habit. The main drawbacks are the paid-only model and paywall friction, including reports of being charged after cancellation and limited free access, plus occasional bugs and a desire for more granular grammar breakdowns.
Pros
  • Engaging, game-like format that makes learning Japanese fun and highly motivating.
  • Strong emphasis on speaking and conversation practice, not just vocabulary.
  • Entertaining content with voice acting and anime/gaming references that keeps study enjoyable.
  • Short, easy-to-digest lessons that support daily study and easy return.
  • Streaks, stamps, and interactive rewards that boost engagement and progress.
Cons
  • Subscription-based pricing with a paywall; free trial is limited and users report being charged after cancellation.
  • Transparency issues about what is free vs paid; marketing can feel misleading.
  • Occasional usability/technical glitches that disrupt progress (navigation hiccups and imperfect speech recognition).
  • Desire for more breakdowns of words/grammar and literal translations would help some learners.

I love the way it’s done, it’s really cute and has speaking practice and tips and whatnot, but after the first four lessons you’re not allowed to do any more without paying per month. I don’t have the option to be paying for something online, so I cannot do it, but if you’re able to pay and you’re serious about learning I do think it’s a good start at the least. Couldn’t say about later on of course.

My sensei SepirothSword57 told me to use this app, it’s one of the best apps to exist, with a built in story and lore to the actual app, it’s an amazing app that should be recognized by all.
