Features & Capabilities

Classical Archives, the largest classical music site in the world, offers several methods to play/explore classical music on its mobile application:

The various features are accessed through the four icons at the bottom of the screen. The player is accessed through the 'two-notes' icon at top-right, and the player-queue is accessed by clicking the [Q] icon at the top. (See below from instructions on how to use the player-queue.)

  1. Library: (The Greats -or- by Composer, Performer or Title Search) which offers all the works we have by each composer, performer or matching title. Once you select a work, you can select what performance of that work you want to listen to.

  2. Must Know: (By Composer -or- by Period & Genre) which is a list selected by our musicologists of the ~800 most important works of classical music you'll want to be familiar with. Selecting a work will always play the performance from the latest release (as opposed to The Library where you can select the performance.)

  3. Playlists: (Featured and Mine) allows you to listen to featured playlists or to create, and listen to, your own. Up to 12 hour-long playlists are allowed. Subscriber account at Classical Archives is required.

  4. Radio: Our radio will continuously stream either a series of single movements, or complete works (depending on your choice) that will be pulled from the selection of Period(s) and Genre(s) you select, from Early & Renaissance to Modern/Contemporary -- in the following genres, or combination of genres: from Orchestral, Solo/Chamber, Vocal, and/or Stage (incl. Operas). The radio will continuously refill the queue, until you stop the player.

Depending on your Classical Archives' status (visitor, member or subscriber), you have complete access to all the complete tracks and works or you may only listen to clips of each track. There is no limit to the number of tracks or works you can play.

This app offers a queuing player (click the [Q] icon at the top to view/edit it): you may enter a complete symphony plus a full opera if you wish. You may add several works and tracks to the player only as long as the current queue does not already contain 20 or more tracks. Each time a track is played, it is removed from the queue and the count goes down. The queue can be edited (remove a track by clicking the 'X' next to it) and it allows you to jump to and immediately play any track in it

User Reviews

Reviews praise the vast catalog and discovery features, but the iOS app struggles with stability, limited playback length, and feature gaps compared with the website. Users report crashes, inability to access full tracks, and playlists/subscriptions not syncing across the app, plus occasional background playback and accessibility issues. Addressing these would bring the app in line with its rich library.
Pros
  • Vast, diverse catalog with many recordings and multiple performances per work
  • Strong discovery and playlist/queuing features (easy to create/manage playlists; visually appealing queue)
  • Good playback quality and reliable streaming with features like gapless playback and AirPlay/background playback
  • Positive overall user experience with design and usability improvements over time
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability related to queue/playlist management (cannot add to playlist consistently; app freezes)
  • Only one-minute previews available in-app; cannot listen to full tracks
  • In-app feature gaps vs website (playlists not accessible, limited album navigation, no performer search)
  • Playback stops when the app is in background or device is locked
  • Login/subscription issues and unclear pricing (subscription not recognized, login problems, password flow)

I’m debating ho many stars to give for an app that is so difficult to use. I decided quality of content rather than presentation is more important. Then I couldn’t even get the “contact us” link to work. I purchase a yrly subscription but neither the website recognizes it when I logged back in. Cleared browser data, restarted phone & nada. . I’ve rarely had to work so hard to get someone to take my $$. The website menu option such as “my account” doesn’t work. I had a free membership until I realized you could get all the classical music you’d ever want for $80 p/yr ($8 p/mo) as opposed to streaming services with specific Classical content for double the price. That said, the App doesn’t have a “forgot your password link” or “my account” link. You have to go to the website for that & it doesn’t work. I’ve loved Classical music since I was 12yrs old- 5 decades or so ago & started a BA in vocal performance. Life happened, I’ve done other stuff w/those 50 yrs. But I’ve always regretted not learning how music works. I happened upon a guy- most call him Maestro- I think it just goes to his head- who is brilliant and willing to teach. I’m now actively listening for things like key changes in Beethoven’s symphonies (I’m going to do something easier) & listening for specific instruments. CA has play lists for such things. I’ll be able to give up my YT Music ($16 p/mo-yay). So this is exactly what I want. If you’re in the SF Bay Area & are interested in performing w/a semiprofessional symphony orchestra & chorus or finally learning how music works, Google: Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra & Chorus.

Classical Archives is my favorite app. It has the best premise and search function of all my apps on my IPhone. I use it a lot. They have improved it over the years. It is now less clunky but still the most clunky of all my commonly used apps. So ironic.

I loved the website, but the app makes listening far more convenient. Additionally, it provides a terrific selection of performances and an easy way to discover new pieces by both familiar and more obscure composers. For example, one month I decided I wanted to listen to all of Mozart. The way the app is structured, it was easy to do.
