User Reviews

Overall, FathomVerse is praised for its ocean-focused, relaxing, educational citizen-science premise, immersive visuals, and engaging updates. Players enjoy contributing to real research while exploring deep-sea imagery. However, the app faces common issues like bugs that disrupt progress, onboarding UX friction, occasional image quality glitches, and UI quirks. Some users also encounter missing species in the selection pool. Despite these drawbacks, the concept has strong appeal and is supported by responsive developers; with stability and UX improvements, it has bright potential as a unique learning-and-exploration experience.
Pros
  • Educational and contributes to ocean science through citizen science participation.
  • Relaxing, unhurried gameplay that's enjoyable and soothing.
  • Rich visuals with real deep-sea images that make learning engaging.
  • Innovative concept with ongoing updates (badges, Bound game mode) and responsive developers.
  • Simple, well-designed interface that's easy to pick up and learn.
Cons
  • Bugs and stability issues that affect progress, saves, and gameplay.
  • Onboarding friction and training that can block proper identification or feel confusing.
  • Photo/image quality is sometimes low, causing pixelation.
  • UI glitches and content overlays (info box blocking image, zoom missing, text off-screen).
  • Gaps in the organism library make some species unavailable for identification.

i have had the app for almost a week now and i think it is an effective way to learn how to identify species in the ocean. i'm going through each species in training to better learn what they are (about half through them all) i think it would be cool if marine mammals were added. i know that they're probably the most recognizable and can also be found in freshwater; however they can still be encountered in the ocean.

This is an awesome idea sort of similar citizen scientist activity as iNaturalist but ocean focused. The photo resolution is pretty bad on most photos so far (just started using it a few hours ago). Looks like thumbnails that have been blown up causing bad pixelation instead of high quality photos. I’m using an 11’ iPad for reference. Also there is a large info box over the top portion of the image that you can’t get rid of. Oddly I don’t see that box on the sample images here. If those issues could get resolved this would be pretty cool app.
