Features & Capabilities

Letter Box is a quick word-puzzle where you form words from letters on a board and connect them into flowing sequences. How to play: Create words using the available letters; consecutive letters cannot come from the same side; connect words in a sequence so the last letter of the previous word starts the next (e.g., HAIR > RATIO > ORANGE).

User Reviews

Overall, users like the concept and find the puzzle engaging and similar to NYT Letterbox, with the free/rewplayable format appealing as an alternative to paid versions. However, progress is hampered by a weak/erratic dictionary that rejects legitimate words, which breaks the experience for many players. Ads are a major pain point for several reviewers due to placement, frequency, and even video ads after every game. UI and input problems (dragging letters, exiting after solving, handling unusual characters) further frustrate players. Some want scoring or achievements. Despite the positives, dictionary accuracy and ads/bugs limit long-term appeal.
Pros
  • Engaging, Letterbox-like Word Box puzzle that scratches the Letterbox itch and is enjoyable.
  • Replayable, NYT-like experience; can be played repeatedly rather than just once.
  • Serves as a free, accessible alternative to the NYT version.
  • Broadly positive reception of the core gameplay.
Cons
  • Dictionary/word list is incomplete or inconsistent, rejecting common and legitimate words.
  • Ads are intrusive and poorly placed, with banner placements, frequent video ads, and ad coverage during play.
  • Frequent UI/UX bugs and input issues (dragging letters sometimes fails, can't exit after solving, unusual characters handling, reporting problems blocked).
  • Missing features like scoring/achievements and progress incentives.
Recent reviews
This is a poor imitation of the NYT Letterboxed. Common words that are in every official dictionary are NOT recognized as valid words. Furthermore, the app’s solution often uses proper nouns, which are not allowed in similar word games. The most recent example I can make is the word CONTRARIAN. Apparently it is not a word. I am updating my previous review to confirm that this app needs some help. I just found two more words that are not recognized as valid even though they are commonly used in proper English: Globalist and Globalities 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️

This game is so hard. I do not like to do it. I do not recommend it if you do it. I definitely do not like it. Do not get this app. Do not do it on New York Times.

The ad covers the part of the game where you submit a word so you are STUCK! What a pain!
