User Reviews

Users praise the app for supporting independent local bookstores and for a convenient, generally solid reading experience with in-app purchases. The mission and ease of buying ebooks and audiobooks are frequent positives. However, recurring complaints span several reviews: reading progress and bookmarks don’t reliably sync across devices; offline reading is inconsistent or blocked; highlighting and annotation UX is clunky with limited color options; accessibility is lacking (VoiceOver not supported); and DRM restrictions lock users into Bookshop’s platform, limiting transfers to other ereaders. Ongoing updates show improvements, but stability and offline behavior remain key areas for fixes.
Pros
  • Supports independent/local bookstores by enabling purchases through Bookshop.org.
  • Convenient in-app purchasing of eBooks and audiobooks.
  • Generally solid reading experience with features like dark mode and adjustable font size, and the ability to resume where you left off.
  • Positive mission and impact of avoiding big corporations.
Cons
  • Reading progress and bookmarks don’t reliably sync across devices.
  • Offline reading is inconsistent; some books won’t open without Wi‑Fi.
  • Highlighting/annotation UX is awkward with limited color options.
  • Accessibility is lacking (VoiceOver not supported).
  • DRM restrictions lock books to Bookshop’s platform and prevent easy transfers to other ereaders.

I want to support independent bookstores but this app is driving me nuts. Every time I close the app at the last page I read, it never opens to that page. It usually opens to the chapter, but then I have to search for where I left off. Am I missing a setting? Certainly that would be an easy fix.

It’s still pretty new but they keep updating this app often and when I’ve emailed about bugs a real person responds and cares! I love buying ebooks and supporting indie stores, I love the settings for font and background. I use mostly on my Palma so I can read this app on an e-ink screen. I hope it keeps getting even better!

I’m a big fan of the ability to read in the size, spacing, and orientation of my choice!
