Features & Capabilities

Paint like the masters and never undo.

Glaze is an award-winning painting software that faithfully replicates the oil painting process. The user discovers the optical mixing of colors, the physical properties of painting tools and - like a painter in the studio - absence of an "undo" option.

Glaze introduces users to historical techniques and processes used by masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, who applied paint layer by layer, and laboriously approached perfection. Thanks to glazes, the layers of paint we are talking about, they achieved effects that are still admired today. However, this technique requires sensitivity, knowledge, time and patience. Now, thanks to Glaze, users can explore the true properties and tones of individual colors from the painting palette, while at the same time exploring their passion.

Glaze features…

— Painting space — • 16 historical oil pigments with their physical properties faithfully reproduced • 4 sable and 4 hog brushes with 80+ predefined distinctive parameters (from number of bristles to length and flexibility) • 2 canvas types in various sizes and with different predefined properties (from paint absorption to texture and light reflection) • Diluting paint to change its shade and behavior • True optical mixing of colors based on a proprietary algorithm • Paint behavior depending on whether the layer is wet or dry, thick or thin • Chalk for sketching and uncommon interactions with wet paint • Rag for correcting or removing paint while it's still wet • Using reference artworks or your own imported images

— Museum Section — • Access to museum collections and dedicated educational materials. • Curated selection of artworks • Artwork exploration in high resolution, with curatorial descriptions, art challenges, and tutorials

User Reviews

As an educational app I'd rate this higher. I'm trying it with painting in mind, so my expectations are different than what the developers intended. What it does really well is maintain the saturation of the color as you decrease the opacity, just like a real glaze (I worked in oils many decades back, then switched to acrylics, using glazing extensively). The limited tools and palette are interesting. Where it's really off target as an oils experiment is that they "dry" too quickly, so you can't smear one color into another. Really, some pigments take days to dry. Nor can you scrub or scrape paint away as you would with real paint (you can, but only on the color just applied). The big glitch, though, is technical, affecting both Apple Pencil and finger. Wherever I touch the screen the stroke appears to the right (at roughly a 2 o'clock position)…about a half inch away at the left side of the canvas and an inch-and-a-half by the time I get to the right side. No way you can do a controlled piece of art or a lesson with that happening. Can you imagine how frustrating this would be for kids, the intended users? If they fix this I'd say get the app. It's free, interesting, and potentially fun.
