The screen splits into two halves, each turned towards its own person. You press your button and speak — they read the translation on their side straight away. They press theirs and answer — you read it on yours. Nobody flips the phone or passes it back and forth, and the conversation doesn't fall apart into pauses.

The main thing: the other person doesn't need anything explained. They are seeing this screen for the first time in their life, yet they get it instantly — here is my half, here is the button, speak. It works with a vendor at a Hanoi market, a taxi driver in Bangkok, a dentist, a stranger from Berlin — no matter where they are from or whether they have ever used a translator.

CARDS YOU PREPARE IN ADVANCE • Food and health: "I don't eat gluten", "no meat", "please, no nuts", "I'm allergic to seafood". Save it once — then just show it instead of explaining again in every cafe. • Small courtesies: hello, thank you, sorry, the bill, please. Fifty words in the local language change how people treat you. • Ready sets by situation: restaurant, taxi, hotel, shopping, clinic, beauty salon. • Your own cards for anything: your flat's address, the name of a medicine, your shoe size.
