The Language the World Forgot to Offer! Hong Kong, Macau, and parts of Southeast Asia use Traditional Chinese script and speak Cantonese. Taiwan also uses Traditional Chinese script, but speaks Mandarin. The only place on earth that uses Simplified Chinese and speaks Putonghua is this one single region — mainland China. Yet when Chinese is offered as a language option, it is invariably set to Simplified Chinese by default. This effectively assumes that every Chinese speaker in the world uses Simplified Chinese and speaks Putonghua, disregarding the existence of Traditional Chinese, Cantonese, Mandarin and other regional variants entirely. If this default is considered acceptable, why is the same logic not applied to English? English speakers are offered a choice between US English and UK English (some even offers Australia/New Zealand English— two variants that are, in most respects, quite similar. By contrast, Traditional and Simplified Chinese are fundamentally different writing systems, and Cantonese and Putonghua are entirely distinct spoken languages. It is simply common sense that this distinction deserves at least the same consideration. This sustained, ongoing disregard for one of the world’s most widely used written systems (Traditional Chinese) and one of its most widely spoken languages (Cantonese) is troubling.
