Review summary

Users broadly praise Suggester 2 as a powerful, portable toolkit for chords, scales, voicings, and progression experimentation, with strong MIDI/DAW integration, a helpful chord lookup/dictionary, and cross-device syncing across Mac, iPad, and iPhone. The biggest downsides are a paywall/upgrade model that locks features and varies by platform, plus stability issues like crashes and occasional data loss. Other concerns include inconsistent Mac/iOS parity and usability gaps for beginners in organizing bars/measures.
Pros
  • Extensive, feature-rich toolset for chords, scales, voicings, and progressions, ideal for on-the-go songwriting.
  • Boosts creativity and helps overcome writer's block with quick exploration of modes, borrowed chords, and voicings.
  • Strong MIDI/DAW integration: export MIDI, use with external gear, and AUv3 support for routing into DAWs like AUM or GarageBand.
  • Chord lookup/dictionary that identifies chords and suggests keys/scales, with easy auditioning of voicings.
  • Cross-device compatibility and instrument options with easy syncing across Mac, iPad, and iPhone.
Cons
  • Paywall and unclear upgrade pricing: many features are locked behind purchases, with additional costs when moving between iOS and Mac.
  • Stability issues: frequent crashes and, in some cases, data loss of saved compositions or sounds.
  • Platform parity issues and inconsistent capabilities: Mac version restricts fret range (1-3) vs iOS (1-12) and separate unlocks across platforms.
  • Usability concerns for beginners: difficulty organizing bars/measures and notational workflow.

2026-05-12 Ju***** I downloaded the first Suggester app in 2020 and I started writing songs again after a number of years due to my band being out of work due to COVID. I love it. I wrote over 250 songs since then using the first app, and I’ve just recently started using Suggester 2. It’s so easy to use and works well with GarageBand. All my songs start with this app. The support is fantastic. He answers my emails immediately and has walked me through a couple of things that I needed help with. I can’t say enough about how great it is. 10 out of 10.

2026-01-25 Wi***** I hardly ever write reviews but… Where has this app been all my life??? Fantastic set of features for pretty much unlimited exploration of music. You don’t have to know music theory, yet this tool will solidly let you adhere to it, just messing around. If you are feeling stuck in chord progressions with the SAME BORING chords every time, and wish you could just try banging out something that sounds amazing in, say, Lydian mode with a few borrowed chords, in about 2 minutes, this app will make you feel unstoppable. Love that I can pick from predefined instruments or connect to my own hardware via MIDI. Export MIDI and drop it right into Ableton. And it works equally well on my Mac and my iPhone. Thank you to whomever came up with this little monster. It is now INDISPENSABLE to my songwriting flow.
