Set Game is a real-time card game. The deck consists of 81 unique cards that vary in four features across three possibilities for each kind of feature: number of shapes (one, two, or three), shape (diamond, squiggle, oval), shading (solid, striped, or open), and color (red, green, or purple). Each possible combination of features (e.g. a card with three striped green diamonds) appears as a card precisely once in the deck.

To increase your score you have to make a set. A set consists of three cards satisfying all of these conditions:

They all have the same number or have three different numbers. They all have the same shape or have three different shapes. They all have the same shading or have three different shadings. They all have the same color or have three different colors.

You can ask for a hint but your score will be decreased.

The game will finish when there are none sets left to be made from the remaining cards.

I love this game and have been playing the card version since I was a kid, and I was excited to find an app version, but I can’t figure out the scoring. It deducts more points for laying out three new cards (which you have to do in order to keep the game going) than you earn for finding a set. Even if I have a perfect game in which I make no mistakes and use no hints, my score just keeps getting lower and lower because the scoring is so wacky. Most sets earn you two points, while laying out three more cards deducts three points. I have figured out that if you add cards when there was actually a set that you did not see, then six points are deducted rather than three, but even when no mistakes are made, it seems impossible to have the score increase as you lose points faster than you gain them, which is frustrating and feels like a mistake on the part of the creators of this app.
