User Reviews

Fran Bow is lauded for its stunning visuals, eerie atmosphere, and a dark, psychologically rich story that blends point-and-click puzzle gameplay with surreal exploration. Reviewers praise the art, world-building, and emotional impact, describing it as immersive and deeply affecting. However, several reviewers note technical issues in Chapter 4—particularly bucket/chemistry puzzles—that block progression, and critique the pay-per-chapter pricing. Content warnings about gore are also a recurring theme. Overall, it's a highly recommended, edge-of-your-seat experience for fans of dark, narrative-driven adventures, with caveats about bugs and cost.
Pros
  • Stunning visual art, animation, and overall art style
  • Rich, dark, psychological story with themes of mental health
  • Engaging, varied gameplay: point-and-click adventure with puzzles, mini-games, and exploration
  • Powerful emotional impact and sense of personal journey
  • Immersive macabre atmosphere and world-building
Cons
  • Chapter 4 bugs and progression blockers (bucket/chemistry puzzles) that can halt progress
  • Pricing model feels expensive due to paying for chapters separately
  • Graphic/gory content may be disturbing and requires trigger warnings

It’s hard to even put the experience of this game into words. It’s a wondrous view into the way an innocent child can see things, and a dark exploration of mental illness on top of that, with the forces of good and evil clashing in such a way where you don’t really know what’s real. If you like classic point and click style games and horror games with deep, fantastical, yet dark plots, then this one is for you. 10/10 experience, although I think an HD rerelease would be quite nice.
