Features & Capabilities

Metal Detector - Stud Finder is a practical utility that uses your smartphone's magnetic field sensor to locate nearby metal objects—such as lost keys, coins, or wires within walls. It detects metals with magnetic properties (iron, nickel, steel and alloys) and notes that non-magnetic materials like silver, gold, and copper may not be detected. In addition to detecting metal, the app includes useful measurement tools: a virtual tape measure, ruler, protractor, and a level.

It is presented as a Chrome extension with subscription options: 1-week from $0.99, 1-month from $2.99, and 12-month from $5.99 (prices may vary by country). Privacy Policy and Terms of Use are available at the provided URLs.

User Reviews

Reviews are mixed: many users praise metal detection capabilities and tool variety, with notable successes locating items and detecting rebar; others report reliability problems and misleading or absent alerts.
Pros
  • Effective at locating metals and recovering items (e.g., gold jewelry) in real-life scenarios.
  • Strong detection performance in certain cases, including detecting rebar through concrete and copper.
  • Offers a broad toolset with useful features (e.g., mapping rebar grids) for metal detection.
Cons
  • Reliability issues: users report inconsistent performance, including no audible alerts or undetected items.
  • False readings/noise: some reviews mention constant noise or misleading signals.

I think it uses the wireless charging thing in the phone, but I’m very impressed. It won’t work as well as an actual metal detector, obviously, but if you turn up the sensitivity if you aren’t around a lot of metal and turn it down if you are, you’ll be fine. FYI once it finds something, you have to kind of move very slowly to find the precise location, as it has some kind of slight delay. Also, when you pull away from the location that the app says the metal is, turn the scanner off then back on before you use again. I found it goes kind of unpredictably haywire once it goes off for a couple of seconds, which can be mitigated by turning the scanner off and on. It’s a 5 star for an app, but compared to a real metal scanner it’s closer to a 3 star. It gets the job done and genuinely impressed me. Hope this helps anyone. It helped me determine whether the stud in my room was wood or metal.
