Keet - Private Encrypted Chat

Secure Messenger, No Tracking

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Keet is the chat app that knows nothing about you—a truly peer-to-peer way to connect. Your messages, files, and calls are shared directly between your devices, never through corporate servers. No central databases. No data mining. Keet keeps your conversations private, fast, and under your control.

Privacy-by-design: no servers, no cloud storage. End-to-end encryption ensures only participants can access messages. Device-to-device transfers reduce lag and dependency on servers. Supports 1-to-1 and group chats, HD audio and video calls, and direct file sharing across desktop and mobile.

User Reviews

Keet is praised for its privacy-first, decentralized P2P design with no middle servers or sign-ups, making it attractive for secure, direct chats. Reviewers view it as a viable or essential work-chat solution for handling sensitive information. However, multiple users report iOS stability problems (crashes), unreliable notifications, and restrictive group/room controls (cannot leave rooms, limited group management). Connection issues with invitations and compatibility problems on older devices are also noted. Despite bugs, Keet is a promising, improvement-prone project with strong privacy advantages.
Pros
  • Privacy-first, decentralized peer-to-peer architecture with no middle servers.
  • No sign-ups or personal information required; direct connections via cryptographic keys and DHT.
  • Viewed as a viable/essential work-chat option for handling sensitive information due to its privacy features.
Cons
  • iOS stability issues: crashes when entering chats or opening rooms.
  • Unreliable notifications that do not arrive consistently.
  • Group/room management limitations: cannot easily leave rooms or create/manage groups.
  • Invite/connection failures: invitations often fail to connect or rooms fail to establish.
  • Old-device compatibility issues: devices like iPhone 7 may not run Keet.

Just love it! Why would any chat app NOT be peer to peer? That’s like Adam, Eve, and … Steve? Just creepy to have a server in the middle. Also, if you’re chatting with someone on the same local network, and you both allow the app to discover local network, the chat never even leaves the building. Well done!
