Tomatalk is a messaging app where chatting with friends quietly turns into language practice. There is nothing to study. Your everyday conversations are delivered in the language you are learning, so you get used to it a little more every day just by talking as usual.

■ Chat across languages Write in any language. Your friend sees the message in the language they chose, and you see replies in yours. Type in Japanese and it arrives in English; type in English and it is polished into natural phrasing before it is sent. Beginners and advanced learners can join the same conversation as themselves. Supported languages include English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French and Spanish, and you can mix them: your friend reads English while you read Korean.

■ Tap to reveal and listen Tap any word or phrase in a message to see its meaning and hear the pronunciation in a bubble. Long-press to save it to your Swipe Deck, copy it, or look it up. You never have to stop the conversation to check a word.

■ Tomataro keeps the conversation going When the chat goes quiet, Tomataro, our AI mascot, suggests a topic that fits the two of you. Translation, topic ideas and phrasing help lower the bar to saying the first thing. You can also chat with Tomataro one-on-one to practice, and Tomataro's stories appear at the top of your chat list.

■ Huddles with live captions and translation Small live voice calls with real-time captions and automatic translation. Tomataro joins to keep the conversation moving, so you can talk in your own voice across the language barrier. Audio keeps playing in the background with the screen off.

■ Tomataro Times Articles written by Tomataro that you can read, listen to as a podcast, and shadow. Fill spare minutes with input without leaving the app.

■ Speaking Gym Practice articles and saved phrases one sentence at a time. AI scores your pronunciation and shows you exactly where it differed.

■ Swipe Deck Save words and phrases from chats and articles, then review them later with a swipe. Sort them into "got it" and "later" and build your own phrasebook.
