Fluss - Granular Playground

Tactile Granular Synthesizer

Features & Capabilities

Fluss is a sonic playground designed by Bram Bos and Hainbach to explore granular synthesis hands-on. The playful touch UI uses kinetic sliders and XY pads linked to a physics model, making modulation tactile and intuitive for live performance, experimentation, and learning.

Core features include a 3-voice grain engine, WAV import, recording, and live processing, MIDI support, Scala import for microtonal workflows, and shimmer feedback that feeds the processed signal back into the grain engine. It's a compact, expressive instrument for stage or studio.

User Reviews

Fluss is praised as a playful, innovative granular synth/processor with a tactile touch interface that makes experimental sound design inviting. Reviewers note its endless sonic potential for evolving textures and soundscapes, and its usefulness as both instrument and effects processor, along with strong value. Common drawbacks include background playback issues, limited sampling (no built-in mic sampler; WAV import only), mobile UI/readability challenges, a desire for native DAW/plug-in support, and requests for more tempo/visual feedback and finer, per-head control.
Pros
  • Playful, innovative touchscreen interface that makes granular synthesis inviting.
  • Endless sonic potential for evolving textures and soundscapes; great as both instrument and effects processor.
  • Inspiring workflow with strong creative potential; good value for the price.
  • Excellent tool for sound design and experimentation; tactile modulation feels intuitive.
  • Versatile use cases (live manipulation, processing external audio) and broad capability.
Cons
  • Background playback stops or struggles when multitasking with other apps.
  • Sampling is limited or unsupported (no built-in mic sampler; relies on WAV/imports; requests for a true sampler).
  • Mobile UI/readability can be awkward on small screens (font size and layout issues).
  • Lack of native DAW/plug-in support; confusion around AUv3 vs standalone; desired DAW workflow improvements.
  • Desires for more tempo/visual feedback and finer per-head control; current controls can be sensitive.
Recent reviews
One use for this app is to take original compositions and put a unique twist on them. Another is to use your voice (or someone else’s) and warp it into who-knows-what? It is possible to record sounds directly into the app, although I tend to prefer using existing sound files. This thing is a bloomin’ playground! Great for soundscapes, which I’m only now later in life starting to experiment with. I am nowhere near fluent with granular synths, so reading others’ comments regarding improvements and alterations is interesting to me — stuff I never thought of. But I’m going with a win-win on this one — and you can’t go wrong with the price point, either!

Can’t hear the output no matter what. Tried closing the app, restarting my device, redownloading and nothing.
