Features & Capabilities

The FRA Rail Crossing Locator helps you locate highway-rail grade crossings and explore detailed USDOT grade crossing data. New features include grade-separated crossings, an inventory-view linked to the official USDOT record, a shareable inventory via email, and a List-View for search results with directions to a crossing.

Users can search by USDOT Crossing ID, address, or by exploring the map; access the official USDOT inventory and collision history; and switch between multiple base maps. The app also supports reporting emergencies via the Emergency Notification System (ENS) and notes that states and railroads are responsible for the accuracy of inventory data; FRA provides the information but does not guarantee its accuracy.

User Reviews

Users praise the app as an essential tool for emergency responders and rail workers, with map-based crossing locations, milepost markers, and detailed crossing data. However, it is plagued by reliability issues: crossings often fail to load, data is outdated or inaccurate, and SSL errors/crashes disable use. Updates sometimes degrade the experience (PDF viewing, UI changes), and real-time information is missing. Many also want Android support. Overall, high value when it works, but persistent stability and data problems undermine usefulness.
Pros
  • Essential tool for emergency responders to locate crossings and relay information, with milepost markers and emergency contact details.
  • Provides rich crossing data (bell type, trains per day, speeds) and milepost references for planning and awareness.
  • Map view helps users locate nearby crossings and assess situational context.
  • Generally highly valued by iOS users when it works and cited as a valuable resource for railroad workers.
Cons
  • Crossings frequently fail to load or show zero crossings, rendering the app useless.
  • SSL errors and secure-connection failures prevent use.
  • Reliability issues after updates: crashes, outdated data, or data not updating; some features require WiFi.
  • Data accuracy problems: crossings shown in wrong locations or missing real-time status; information may be stale.
  • UX regressions after updates (PDF viewing requirements, viewing information is hard) and lack of Android support.

POS app just randomly decided that crossings are not a thing anymore

Crossing info is not as user friendly as in the past. Basic info not displayed as clearly. Also, this app used to show nearby crossings. Now it does not. Connected to office wifi - won't show crossings. Connected to 5G in the field- won't show crossings. Search by railroad - won't show crossings. The only way to see a crossing is to search exact DOT number.
