MBraille turns your iPhone or iPad into a braille-first workspace for writing, editing, and everyday tasks. More than a keyboard, it combines fast touchscreen braille entry with navigation, editing, commands, and file tools for users who want an efficient eyes-free workflow.

Write with a customizable 6-dot layout, hear immediate speech feedback, and control the app with short gestures. MBraille supports both contracted and uncontracted braille in many languages, so you can work the way you already know.

Key features:

  • Fast touchscreen braille input with customizable dot positions
  • Designed for VoiceOver and supports self-voicing when VoiceOver is off
  • Rich editing with cursor movement, read-back, selection, copy, cut, paste, undo, erase, and search
  • Notes, saved files, bookmarks, command history, and quick navigation
  • Command mode for messages, phone calls, email, calendar events, web search, opening apps, file management, and help
  • On-device voice dictation
  • Aliases and gesture bindings for repeated phrases and frequent commands
  • Cloud sync for MBraille files with Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive
  • One-handed mode and external keyboard support
  • Speech feedback by character, word, sentence, and more

User Reviews

MBraille is repeatedly praised for fast Grade 2 braille input, in-app editing, and strong iOS integration, with ongoing updates and community support. Key benefits include multi-language Braille with dot commands and the ability to control other apps from the keyboard. Noted drawbacks center on on-screen input usability, inconsistent gestures, cost and reliability issues with upgrades/third-party keyboard features, and occasional loss of voice feedback on certain iOS versions. Overall, its power and accessibility outweigh drawbacks for many users, though polish is still needed.
Pros
  • Fast, accurate Grade 2 contracted braille input with multi-language support and dot commands.
  • In-app editing and spell checking, plus the ability to perform tasks in other apps without leaving MBraille.
  • Deep integration with iOS apps and automation (dot commands, posting to social media, etc.).
  • Active development and community engagement—frequent updates add UEB, custom layouts, and new features.
  • Independence from external keyboards; suitable as a primary braille input method for texting and note-taking.
Cons
  • On-screen braille input can be hard to use for some users due to fixed dot positions and finger placement, making it less intuitive than native solutions.
  • Gesture/navigation can be inconsistent, with issues like exit gestures, edit-field disappearance, and delete-word gestures not always working.
  • Upgrade/third-party keyboard costs and limitations; concerns about translation quality and refund processes.
  • Loss of spoken feedback on iOS 13.1 and similar OS versions reduces accessibility for some users.

I used to love this app. I paid for the full version so many years ago that I forget how long exactly, but it has been at least 10 years. More recently since the Ios 26 update, it hasn't worked as smoothly, so I was happy to see the update the other day. Unfortunately, when I opened the app after updating, it prompts me with a message saying a subscription is required, but if you have paid for a full version, you can restore purchase or managed in the App Store. But when I do this, nothing is found since I didn't purchase as a subscription but as a full version. And I haven't found a way to contact the developer. So I now have an app that I paid I think $50 for that I absolutely loved that no longer functions. I don't feel inclined to subscribe to something that I already paid for, especially since I wouldn't use many of the new features they say they have added. I just want the functions that I had before updating a few days ago.

So, it's taken me like a decade to really start using this, and now I can't believe I waited so long! MBraille is incredible! I love that I can review and edit text without leaving the keyboard, switch languages with one gesture, and even the clicks while using character echo are very satisfying! I'm telling all my braille user friends about MBraille. The smart keyboard seems to be more adaptable to my fingers than BSI, which I think will help my friends with shorter fingers. :) Thanks for a fantastic app! Keep it up!
