User Reviews

Most reviews converge on a negative experience: paywalls and subscription prompts hinder access, notifications are unreliable, and the app performance is slowed by ads with navigation issues. The new format also omits current print pages and sections, which frustrates users accustomed to the print edition. Together, these recurring issues indicate a broadly degraded usability and content accessibility compared with prior versions.
Pros
Cons
  • Paywalls and subscription prompts block access to articles, even for some digital subscribers.
  • App performance is slow and unreliable due to ads; tapping to open articles often fails and navigation/back actions can be problematic.
  • Content format has changed poorly: current print edition pages/sections are missing in the new layout.
  • Notifications are unreliable or not consistently shown.
  • Intrusive prompts and monetization (paywalls/ads) degrade the overall reading experience.
Recent reviews
I enjoy reading articles from the Pioneer Press and want to support local journalism. However, when the articles in my newsfeed are 6+ months old, it’s difficult to want to continue subscribing.

Heres a typical subscriber use case. 1. See a notification that piques interest. 2App shows you the article but it’s blocked by a nag telling you to update to 10.4.2 first. 3. Scream at your phone because this is a stupid little incremental update, relax. 4. Go do App Store to update. Takes a minute cuz the app is bigger than it needs to be. 5 Open the updated app. Your article is now gone. 6. Head over to startribune.com
