Features & Capabilities

PlantNet lets you identify a plant from a photo. It’s handy when you don’t have a botanist nearby and contributes to a global citizen science project that helps scientists study plant biodiversity.

With features to improve accuracy, it supports many plant types—from wild flora to cultivated species—and you can share observations for review and inclusion in the growing image gallery. The extension offers tools like genus and family filtering, re-identification of shared observations, multi-flora search, favorites, image galleries, and a map of your observations. A web version is available at identify.plantnet.org.

User Reviews

PlantNet is praised for accurate, quick identifications and its educational value, plus useful offline lookup features. However, users face persistent access issues due to IP/country blocks (especially in the US), frequent network/technical errors, and update-related outages. Some reviews also note the app focuses on ID with little care guidance, which can be a drawback for beginners.
Pros
  • Accurate and quick plant identifications.
  • Educational and useful in professional settings for teaching clients about plants.
  • Offline lookup capability (and plotting percent of species in plots) is a valuable feature.
  • Easy to use and user-friendly interface.
Cons
  • Geographic/IP blocking prevents access (notably in the US), often requiring a VPN or different network.
  • Frequent network/technical errors and outages, leading to unreliable performance (internal server errors, network errors).
  • Update-related issues have caused or worsened the app's unusability for some users.
  • Primarily identification-focused with limited care guidance, making it less beginner-friendly or less useful for users needing care information.

Easy to use with photos for cross reference & geotagging. I like that I can search by region or worldwide & can narrow search by things like fruits, leaves, flowers etc & reflect back to species ive already confirmed. Love that they’ve added a small rainbow flag in the home screen for pride month as well, feels like a tiny bonus💖
