Journey through Palestine.
Mawtini · Palestine is a free, fully offline atlas and game of historic Palestine — 1,025 villages and towns, 16 districts, 33 hand-drawn maps.
You are given a name. You find where it belongs on the hand-drawn map of its district. Then you read its story.
The game is the hook. Remembrance is the point.
HOW IT PLAYS
- A village name appears over the traced map of its district. Tap where it stood.
- Five lives a round. Points depend on how close you land, with a bonus for finishing with lives to spare.
- Stuck? A hint narrows the area down, for a fifth of that village's points.
- Replay any district as often as you like. Replaying can only improve your record — it never takes anything away.
TODAY'S VILLAGE
One village a day, the same one for everybody, chosen by the date. Play it in a minute and keep your streak. Add the Home Screen widget and the day starts with a name.
THE ATLAS
Browse or search all 1,025 places by district, with alternate spellings kept so a village is found however you write it. Around 600 carry a written history: what the place was, how many lived there, what happened to it, and where the account came from. Where a source could not be confirmed, the app shows no history rather than a guess. When a village was destroyed, it says so plainly and quietly. A village is never a score.
MEMORY MAP
Every place you locate lights up on one map of Palestine. All of your progress, in a single picture.
REAL HAND-DRAWN MAPS
You play on scans of hand-traced district maps — the same maps the villages were recorded on. No satellite tiles, no modern borders. This is an atlas of what was recorded.
ENGLISH AND ARABIC — NOT A TRANSLATION LAYER
Village names, districts and histories are stored in both languages, written by people rather than machine-translated on the fly. Arabic turns the whole app right-to-left, with Arabic type and, if you want them, Eastern Arabic numerals. You can set the language for this app alone without changing the rest of your phone.
WORKS WITH NO SIGNAL AT ALL
Every map, name, history and sound ships inside the app. Gameplay makes no network requests whatsoever.
PRIVACY
No account, no sign-up, no email. No analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no third-party SDKs. Your progress lives on your device and syncs across your own devices through your private iCloud, which only you can read. Apple's privacy label for this app is Data Not Collected.
ACCESSIBILITY
VoiceOver labels throughout, Dynamic Type, Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency.
