Features & Capabilities

Blue Iris Client is an iOS companion app for the Blue Iris Windows PC software. To use it, you must have Blue Iris version 6 running on a Windows PC or VM. The app provides a single, secure gateway to your home camera network and uses a session-based protocol so no passwords are transmitted in plaintext.

Features include managing multiple Blue Iris installations, geofencing, device alerts, push notifications, fast H.264 streaming, PTZ/IR control, audio listen/talk, camera navigation, playback of recordings on the PC (up to 64x), downloading or selectively deleting PC recordings, broadcasting live video into a PC camera window, and remote DIO control. Note that background GPS and audio streaming can impact battery life.

User Reviews

User reviews show strong appreciation for Blue Iris as a mobile viewer when it works, highlighting clear live feeds and strong value within the BI ecosystem. However, updates consistently bring stability and loading issues, reliability problems, an aging UI, missing features, and price concerns. The app is powerful but can be brittle after updates, with mixed feedback on support and ongoing costs.
Pros
  • When it works, Blue Iris for iOS provides reliable, crystal‑clear live feeds and is the primary mobile viewer for Blue Iris cameras.
  • Excellent companion for Blue Iris Desktop users; it enables monitoring on iPhone/iPad with useful customization options.
  • Many users view the app as a game‑changer for surveillance within the Blue Iris ecosystem and value its ability to monitor remotely.
  • Some reviewers appreciate ongoing development and improvements from the developers.
  • Push notifications can be useful for monitoring when they function properly.
Cons
  • Major updates frequently cause instability: playback becomes slow or won’t start, and the app can become unusable for days or weeks.
  • Reliability issues persist with loading and connecting: cameras may not load, appear intermittently, or require endless retries on iPhone/iPad.
  • The UI/UX is outdated and changes (like color scheme) are disliked, making navigation and footage scrubbing harder.
  • Missing or flaky features: saving clips to iOS camera roll (BI 5), VPN support, and AppleTV integration are limited or unavailable, and push notification reliability is inconsistent.
  • Pricing and licensing concerns: the app is paid and may require ongoing update/subscription fees, which some users view as a negative.
Recent reviews
The latest update no longer supports the original version of the server for playing back surveillance videos. They also didn’t fix the bug where most of the cameras in the main view are intermittently not showing up. Perhaps it works with the newest version of server, but the original version which supposed to still work, is no longer supported. Very disappointing.

Latest update causes playback to be super slow or never start. Not good at all. Please revert this release.
