Photo Investigator: GPS & EXIF

Edit Metadata + Detect AI Art

Overview

Features & Capabilities

The Photo Investigator gives you deep insight into photo and video metadata. See location, date, device, file size, and more across all your photos, with the ability to edit or remove GPS EXIF data, captions, copyrights, and dates (date editing available via in-app purchase). Bulk edit lets you apply changes to multiple photos at once.

This extension works in Messages, Photos, and other apps, lets you open locations in Waze, Maps.Me, Apple Maps, or Google Maps, and even view depth maps for portrait shots. It also shows all versions created during edits or RAW imports and supports sharing metadata across apps.

User Reviews

The Photo Investigator is praised for its clean UI, ease of use, and strong metadata viewing/editing capabilities, with reliable performance and broad usefulness for beginners and professionals. Common drawbacks include pricing/upgrade frustrations, gaps relative to native OS features, inconsistent handling of location metadata, and occasional performance issues such as slow saves or larger file sizes after edits.
Pros
  • Intuitive, clean UI and an easy-to-use interface.
  • Powerful metadata viewing and editing capabilities with detailed metadata and straightforward edits.
  • Reliable, solid performance; runs smoothly and is dependable.
  • Beginner-friendly and versatile; useful for a range of metadata tasks.
Cons
  • Pricing/upgrade friction: repeated upgrade prompts and concerns about paying twice.
  • Gaps vs native OS: some features feel redundant or less valuable compared with Apple's native metadata tools.
  • Location metadata visibility inconsistent: location data is not visible for most photos and map features can be unreliable.
  • Performance/storage issues: saving edits can be slow, and certain edits can noticeably increase file size.

This utlilty beats any other EXIF app I've tried and I've tried about 20 of the best I could find! (Metapho, View EXIF, PhotoMeta, EXIF Wizard Pro, etc) This is the only one to truly show all the stuff! I absolutely CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IT. Trust me, THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT. Also - buy the upgrade. I did just to help encourage this developer to keep this app going for years to come because I can’t imagine not having it. 10Y Update: I’ve had this app over 10 years now! Still use it every day.

Photo Investigator has been my go-to when it comes to searching/indexing my photos online. For example, though VSCO embeds information that allows quick searches using Google Photos or Flickr, Snapseed does not. Photo Investigator allows me to create a template that embeds that info, all while preserving location data, etc. It’s been my most commonly used app, tbh. The developer has also been very responsive when I reported any issues.
