Features & Capabilities

With Shutter-Speed you can test the shutter speeds of your analog cameras just with your iPhone. Please note that the full potential of this App is only reached if you use it in combination with the PhotoPlug. The PhotoPlug is an optical sensor which connects to the headphone-jack of your iPhone and enables you to measure the actual amount of light passing through the camera shutter. Please visit www.filmomat.eu for detailed information and for ordering the PhotoPlug.

How-To:

Point the camera towards a bright light source. Place the PhotoPlug closely behind the camera shutter. Start the measurement and release the shutter. The App automatically analyzes the signal and calculates the shutter speed. All measurement values can be stored into a handy table. Multiple different cameras/lenses can be stored. A correction factor is calculated, which you can use to compensate a faulty shutter speed. For example, if you measure the 1/60s and it turns out to be 1/50s, the App will tell you that the shutter-speed is 1/3 stops too long. This gives rise to a correction factor of -1, indicating that you have to close your aperture by 1/3 f-stop to get a correct exposure.

Without PhotoPlug, the App will record the sound of the camera shutter and calculate the shutter speed from that. Please note that this procedure will only give useable results for speeds below 1/30sec. With the PhotoPlug, shutter speeds up to 1/500sec can be measured.

User Reviews

Shutter-Speed provides accurate audio timing for slower shutters and hardware support via the Photo Plug with a handy camera database. However, many reviews highlight stability and compatibility problems on older devices, crashes when saving data, and UI issues that complicate use. Hardware recognition for the phot plug is unreliable for some users, and there are noted feature gaps (additional shutter speeds, flexible recording) that limit its practicality.
Pros
  • Audio-based shutter timing is accurate for slower shutter speeds.
  • Works well with the Photo Plug hardware to provide precise shutter measurements for vintage cameras.
  • Built-in camera database and the ability to save measurements per camera help with organization and calibration.
  • Easy to use for camera-savvy users and provides a straightforward workflow.
Cons
  • Significant compatibility and stability issues on older devices (e.g., iPhone 5s/3GS) and after updates; the app may not work consistently across devices.
  • Crashes or freezing when saving waveforms, making the app unreliable at times.
  • User interface and controls are inconsistent after updates (difficult to select shutter speeds, inconsistent waveform zoom, sometimes non-intuitive).
  • Photoplug recognition is finicky or unreliable; some reviewers struggle to get the hardware working or recognized.
  • Missing shutter speeds and data-recording options (e.g., lack of 1/75 or 1/1000, decimal vs fractional displays, inability to record certain measurements or organize/delete entries).

It no longer records shutter speeds longer than 1/2 second correctly, and the interface is now far less intuitive. You’ve crippled a very capable app. Why? Update in response to developer: when I attempt to measure 1 second, it gives a nonsense value, usually in the range of 1/400th to 1/600th second. That’s what I mean when I say it no longer works for 1 second exposures. Developer responds to say they don’t understand my problem, very dismissive.

I feel like the automatic signal analysis and peak detection makes this version less than reliable than the old version. It is always dicey using an LED light source since LED light output is not constant, but I did find one that I was able to use until this update. Also, the zooming of the waveform is extremely inconsistent and I find myself fighting the app to get it to zoom in and out. Overall the old version worked better for me.

Bought a photo plug years back and I could never get the clean on and off signal as shown in their company video. The signal captured was full of noise. Until I realized that most of the iphone lighting adapters are for headphones . Until I got a "trrs (tip, ring, ring, sleeve) to lighting" adapter for microphone. Most are "trs" and will not work properly when connected to an iphone, Also ensure it's Apple MFI certified. Now it's working without issue.
