Features & Capabilities

LightBlue® is a BLE development tool Chrome extension that lets you scan and connect to nearby Bluetooth Low Energy devices in central mode, or run as a virtual peripheral in peripheral mode. You can inspect device profiles, read and write characteristics, and subscribe to notifications, with RSSI values to gauge distance.

The extension supports cloning and saving virtual peripheral profiles, a library of preconfigured templates, and a comprehensive log of BLE events for sharing. Its Cloud Connect feature can publish data to AWS IoT or Adafruit IO, making it a practical tester for BLE firmware and development boards.

User Reviews

LightBlue is valued for its BLE scanning and proximity-based device locating, and for showing nearby devices and peripheral readings. Users also leverage it for testing BLE services. However, reviews frequently cite reliability issues after updates, a UX that is hard to read or customize, technical data that's hard to interpret, and limited usefulness for locating devices at a distance. Overall, a powerful BLE toolkit with notable stability and UX flaws.
Pros
  • Great for locating lost BLE devices via signal strength, helping users find items like a Fitbit, hearing aids, or an Oura Ring.
  • Excellent BLE device discovery; shows nearby devices and lets you inspect details.
  • Provides useful battery level readings for supported peripherals and helps verify device health.
  • Offers BLE testing features (read/write to characteristics), useful for IoT development and debugging; often considered better than many alternatives.
Cons
  • Reliability issues after updates and redesigns, with some peripherals failing to connect or the app becoming buggy.
  • UI and accessibility problems: light fonts on white background, no dark mode, and no options to adjust font size.
  • Data presentation is overly technical (hex service/characteristic IDs) with little in-app guidance for non-technical users.
  • Limited effectiveness for locating devices at a distance; often only indicates proximity rather than a precise location.

Preview images show names of devices, which it in-fact does not do, you have to name them manually.. lets not even get started on its scan or connect for device alone, 5ft away from a device with bluetooth and it doesn’t even show up in the app at all, and dont even get me started with a smart watch, it doesnt even see that and thats less then 2 feet away at any time.. Completely broken with absolutely no point to the app other then seeing your device names(once input manually)

Lost my Fitbit while out hiking. Found out on the Fitbit app that there is no good way to locate it. The best suggestion they had was to see the last time it synced. These days it always tries to sync so there’s no record. This app was mentioned in the Help files as a solution for iOS users. After walking for hundreds of yards, I started to doubt that this was even doing anything. Why not just open iOS settings, and look at my Bluetooth device devices that are connected? Eventually, I found my watch on the trail. That was with my own eyes. The iOS settings did indicate a connection. Went back to LightBlue to test it, toggled, a few buttons, no indication at all! Dvlpr: Please reach out to Fitbit to remove this as a possible solution, finding one
