Features & Capabilities

The MISIN smartphone app provides a mobile solution for the capture of invasive species field observation data. You can play an important role in the early detection and rapid response to new invasive threats in your area by contributing invasive species observations to the MISIN database. These data are then shared with an emerging network of database efforts for the tracking of invasive threats and are used by land managers to help make informed decisions regarding the management and impact of invasive species. Your data can be browsed through the MISIN website at: http://www.misin.msu.edu.

Features •Identify and report 400+ invasive plant and animal species •Capture and submit species observations from the field •Include images taken in the field with your observation •View real-time species distribution maps •Browse images and species information on top Midwest invaders

User Reviews

Overall, MISIN offers useful, map-based location data and rich invasive-species content, with the ability to report presence or absence. However, repeated issues plague its usability: registration and login problems, frequent crashes and blank screens, GPS/location permission glitches, and outdated UI/compatibility with older iPhones and iOS versions. These reliability and compatibility problems appear across multiple reviews and significantly hinder regular use, though core features remain valuable when the app runs smoothly.
Pros
  • Location data and maps help users find invasive species and report sightings.
  • Rich information about invasives with photos and details.
  • Ability to report presence or absence of invasives through the app.
Cons
  • Registration and login issues (blank pages, failed email verification, requiring web registration).
  • Frequent crashes, freezes, or blank screens making the app unusable.
  • GPS/location permission problems and outdated iOS compatibility (GPS prompts/errors with no settings, compatibility gaps).
  • Outdated UI and poor support for newer devices (older screen formats, iPhone 5s/iOS 11 compatibility).

After several tries to create an account, I was finally able to make it work. There is no way to reset a lost password that I have found. I tried to report lesser celandine in Ted black woods and it took me to a screen that said “habit” :( I was excited to use this app but now it seems to be unusable

I’ve tried several times to register (and used 2 different email addresses to do so), but an email link to complete registration never came to me. Checked junk mail and filters, not there either. Not sure if using this app without completing registration actually results in reporting invasives or if I’m wasting my time. Please fix app now or I will be deleting it!

I’m not sure what changed, but the app finally lets me open the report feature without going to a blank screen and freezing. Nice!
