Features & Capabilities

XScreenSaver is a Chrome extension that brings a rich collection of historic and educational graphics demos into your browser. It draws from the long-standing XScreenSaver suite, the standard screen saver collection used on Linux and Unix systems.

Since its first release in 1992, with ports to macOS (2006) and iOS (2012), the project has grown to include hundreds of demos. On iOS there is no screen saver feature, but you can still explore and interact with the demos from the collection.

User Reviews

XScreenSaver is loved for its ad-free, free-to-use nature and vast, nostalgia-packed collection of classic screensavers that look great on macOS and iOS. It’s versatile and family-friendly, with strong cross-device appeal. Primary downsides are missing bookmarking/hide features, a fiddly exit UI, occasional iOS photo-library crashes, and no setting to prevent auto-lock. Overall, the app delivers strong nostalgia, variety, and value with some usability improvements potential.
Pros
  • Ad-free, no data collection, and free to use.
  • Huge, diverse collection of classic screensavers with nostalgic appeal and high-quality visuals.
  • Cross-platform compatibility across macOS, iPhone, and iPad (portable and easy to use).
  • Free with generous value and a wide variety of designs.
  • Nostalgic and enjoyable to browse; appealing to both long-time users and newcomers.
Cons
  • Missing favorites/bookmarks and hide functionality to manage liked screens.
  • Exit/dismissal of a demo is fiddly and not very intuitive (tiny close button).
  • Occasional crashes when using the photo library on iOS (iOS 13 issue).
  • No option to prevent auto-lock / keep the screen on while a screensaver runs.

No ads, no data collection, it does exactly what it is supposed to do. Reminds me of when computers were fun.

I have had this on my Mac for ages now. Put this on my iPhone and was messing with it. But what if widget for iOS’ standby mode when plugged in and locked on side? What if we lived on the moon? Where is Waldo?

I have to point out that I use my iPad Pro and my Macbook Pro M2 for Music Production, Song Writing, Sound Productions, Recording... Even though its an amazing job, its still a job, and work needs to be done to meet standards and deadlines. Most music apps/software/programs are becoming more and more user friuendly... The GUIs are full of beautiful eye candy and resemble analog equipment. Because software is much cheaper than hardware, it appeals to 'Starving Artist' and musicians. And since the early stages of Windows, Linux and Mac musicians have migrated to the world of PC's! So I have been a part of the ever growing screen savers since 1995, and this brings back memories, and been an inspiration! The amount of content and the control you have over these amazing screen savers is well worth over $100 ... I feel like this app is too good to be true! i can only hope that this app is able to be on the app store for years and years! Thank you so much for this AMAZING APP! Also thank you for allowing it to be used on iPad as well as Macbook!
