Features & Capabilities

This easy-to-use app gives children the ability to read books from American Reading at Home, the award-winning, school-based program that has been teacher-vetted, parent-approved, and kid-tested in thousands of schools and homes across America.

PLEASE NOTE: Requires an American Reading at Home account (for individuals) or SchoolPace subscription (for schools).

Our books are specially designed for children learning to read at the Kindergarten and first-grade reading levels. The books work just like training wheels on a bicycle. A child will gain confidence by using books at the “just right” level of challenge; as he/she develops new skills, the “training wheels” are gradually removed. Because so much of the reading support is provided by the actual books, children can do much of the learning on their own. This provides the child with tremendous confidence and a sense of ownership of their own learning. It also makes learning to read fun and enjoyable!

User Reviews

ARC Bookshelf has potential as a reading tool with engaging visuals and school-friendly content, plus features like nested collections and tap-to-turn. However, users frequently report login/signup issues, crashes and loading failures, and limited content/levels (including Spanish). Accessibility gaps, such as no pinch-to-zoom, also hinder reading for some. Improvements in reliability, content breadth, and accessibility are needed to fully satisfy users.
Pros
  • Helps with reading and is used in schools to develop reading skills.
  • Engaging visuals with realistic page-turn effects and a tap-to-turn option.
  • Nested collections help users locate content more easily.
  • Digital format supports readers with low vision, improving accessibility (though zoom is still missing).
Cons
  • Frequent login/signup problems and password/account creation issues.
  • Crashes and loading problems, including books not loading and the app closing unexpectedly.
  • Limited content and levels, with few books at base levels and sparse non-English (Spanish) options.
  • Lack of accessibility features like pinch-to-zoom or zooming, making reading harder for some users.
