Features & Capabilities

Runtime is a modern timecode calculator designed for editors across film, TV, and radio. It shows exactly how far you are from picture lock, calculates total runtime and total content time, and reveals act percentages. It can compute how far over or under time a project is, display timings with an intuitive bar graph, and support multiple projects. It also supports common frame rates (23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 59.94, 60) and includes a timer for on-set timing. It’s a streamlined, no-nonsense tool that focuses on the tasks post-production professionals actually need.

With one-tap email capability to share timing, Runtime eliminates cruft from older timecode calculators and aims to speed up editing workflows. It’s embraced by editors, producers, and post supervisors worldwide. Please note: Runtime was built for adding times to a total; it isn’t designed for timecode multiplication or division. If you’re looking for a simple, reliable timing tool, Runtime is for you.

User Reviews

Runtime is widely loved by TV editors for timing runs, praised as intuitive and time-saving, with easy sharing of run times and act breakdowns to keep teams aligned. It’s seen as faster and more reliable than Avid’s timer, with a clear visualization of longest segments. Common caveats include stability issues and feature gaps—nonstandard or separate breaks, a built-in timecode calculator, and keeping the goaltime visible. Overall, reviewers would still recommend it to colleagues while hoping for these improvements.
Pros
  • Essential and widely used by editors/producers to time shows and lock run times.
  • Easy to use, simple and targeted, making timing tasks quick and reliable.
  • Visualizes act durations, helping identify the longest segments for faster adjustments.
  • Supports sharing and collaboration—emailing run times and act breakdowns keeps teams in sync.
  • Often seen as faster and more effective than traditional timecode calculators (e.g., Avid).
Cons
  • Stability issues: some users report crashes and reliability problems, especially after updates.
  • Feature gaps remain, including nonstandard/separate breaks and the desire for a built-in timecode calculator.
  • Collaboration needs: projects sharing across editors to support multi-editor shows.
  • Goal-time display was removed in updates; users want it back/visible.

I have used Runtime for countless years getting every show I lock to time. The ability to cut and paste run times and send them to executives during the process is so beneficial. Visualization of what acts are the longest is crucial. Love this app!!!!
