Features & Capabilities

PocketTorah helps you study the weekly Torah and Haftarah anywhere, anytime, for free. It includes the entire text in Hebrew with translation and on-demand audio; tap any verse to hear the cantillation and see the corresponding text highlighted.

With the Tikkun View, you can switch between vowelized Hebrew and the traditional Torah presentation (crowns, with or without vowels). This project was supported by the Jewish New Media Innovation Fund, making Jewish learning more accessible.

User Reviews

Pocket Torah is a helpful learning tool for practicing Torah trope, especially for non-Hebrew learners and for bat mitzvah prep, with useful playback and font options. However, it is plagued by stability and accuracy issues: frequent crashes, lag, and desynced highlighting, plus incorrect audio and Haftorah content. Feature gaps like lack of search/favorites/feedback and missing dark mode further hinder use. If reliability and audio accuracy are fixed, it would be a strong, modern Torah learning app.
Pros
  • Helps learn and practice Torah trope; great for bat mitzvah prep.
  • Helpful for non-Hebrew speakers; improves reading and learning with audio.
  • Flexible playback and font/translation options (slow chanting, multiple voices, switch between fonts).
  • Strong concept and overall learning tool—modern Torah resource.
  • Allows switching between prayer book font with vowels and Torah script.
Cons
  • Frequent stability issues: crashes, lag, freezes, and unresponsive controls.
  • Audio/text inaccuracies: wrong words, mispronunciations, and Haftorah mismatches.
  • Missing features and UI gaps: no favorites, no search, no in-app feedback; settings reset; no dark mode.
  • Highlighting desynchronizes with audio; pause/back button unreliable.
  • Some reviews note quality concerns or inconsistencies in content (not universally accurate).

Very good tool for checking myself on a few things when I think I may be a bit off tune. No substitute for knowing trope but otherwise extremely helpful.

This app has allowed me to read and learn the Torah while listening and appreciating the trope. For someone whose first language is not Hebrew, and was not brought up in a Yeshiva, this is a fantastic tool.

This app is a great concept, but the recordings get a LOT of things very wrong. In some cases things are said completely incorrectly, and sometimes a completely different word is said instead of the correct one. I strongly suggest to anyone who created this app to redo all the recordings because I actively get annoyed when it gets 1/5 of the words wrong, and sometimes even gets the trup wrong. If the point of recordings is to teach people how to lein properly, the recordings should not be completely incorrect.
