User Reviews

Users generally find Hangeul 101 helpful for quickly learning the Korean alphabet, especially beginners, thanks to easy-to-use slides, pronunciation cues, and practice quizzes. Quizzes and test modes aid memorization. However, many reviews cite paywall limitations, with significant features behind a paid tier, and some report reliability issues like incorrect quiz results and audio pronunciation mismatches. Others note bugs such as freezing and non-working sections (Jamo). The app is limited to Hangul and does not cover broader language learning, though it serves as a solid starter for alphabet mastery.
Pros
  • Easy to use and beginner-friendly; quick to learn Hangul.
  • Effective for learning the Hangul alphabet with slides, pronunciation cues, and example words.
  • Quizzes and test mode help with memorization and self-testing.
  • Clear charts and structure that make the basics approachable.
  • Useful as an entry point or refresher, with usable content before paying for the full app.
Cons
  • Many features are behind a paywall; not free or expensive to unlock.
  • Pronunciation audio quality issues and mismatches with example words.
  • Quizzes glitch and scoring can be inaccurate.
  • Stability issues like freezing/crashing and some features not working (e.g., Jamo).
  • Limited scope: only teaches the alphabet; misses double consonants/diphthongs and can rely on problematic romanization.

I downloaded it about two weeks ago and it’s helped me learn hanguel a lot better! I already knew a small amount because I’ve been using duo but still almost a beginner. It has a test mode which I use often but you can also go through the slides of all the letters with the pronunciation, and what English letter it sounds like, and it even gives you examples of words with this letter. My average is 6/10 letters correct but the other day I got to 8/10 and I’m so happy to be seeing improvement. I have nothing bad to say about this app. It does only teach the Korean alphabet so not the most helpful for learning the language but it’s definitely great just for learning the alphabet.

So apparently, hearing the sounds of the syllables is off limits. The quizzes are ok, but they glitch and say you got it wrong when it was right, not to mention you only have a limited amount you can be quizzed on, because the rest you have to pay for. It’s not horrible, but it’s not the best.
