Hands-On Equations 1 – Learn algebra the fun way

Hands-On Equations 1 is an educational algebra app for kids ages 8 and up. It uses a virtual balance scale, blue x pawns, and number cubes to turn equations like 4x+2=3x+9 into solvable steps across six lessons. Each lesson starts with an instructional video, followed by two practice problems, then access to ten lesson exercises, pairing concrete actions with algebraic thinking.

With more than 80 equations and multi-user support, the app tracks progress as students build confidence and learn legal moves to simplify and solve equations. This digital adaptation of the proven Hands-On Equations method makes algebra approachable for kids—and even adults who want a playful, intuitive refresher.

User Reviews

Overall, Hands-On Equations 1 is praised for a tangible, visual approach that helps learners of various ages grasp algebra with confidence. Reviewers highlight the concrete method, clear progression, and distraction-free design that fosters independent practice. The main recurring downside is technical: multiple users report video playback or audio problems. Despite these glitches, many users report rapid understanding, willingness to move to Level 2, and appreciation for a novel, accessible path to algebra suitable for homeschoolers and adults alike.
Pros
  • Hands-on, visual learning with pawns and a balance scale makes algebra concrete and intuitive.
  • Clear, well-paced lessons that build on each other with minimal distractions.
  • Helpful video tutorials that explain steps and strategies.
  • Broad accessibility across ages and learning styles; boosts confidence and reduces math anxiety; works well for homeschooling and independent learners.
  • Affordable and expandable to higher levels (Level 2) for continued practice.
Cons
  • Video playback and audio issues on several devices that prevent watching the lessons.

I bought this for my daughter and honestly didn’t expect much — most math apps are just dressed-up flashcards. This one is different. She’s moving little pawns around a balance scale and solving real equations without even realizing that’s what she’s doing. When I told her “you just did algebra,” her face lit up. The lessons go at a good pace and build on each other, so she never feels lost or bored. No flashy distractions, no annoying characters, just a clear method that works. She actually asks to do the next lesson, which has never happened with any other math app in our house. If your kid is curious about math or struggling with it, give this a try. Worth every penny.

I really love your app and cannot wait to try it again for some reasons. The first reason is that the playing pieces that can be moved help me visualize the problem better. Second, the videos guide you through how to do the math. Third, the funny cartoons make me more engaged in the lesson. To conclude, your apps are great and taking away my algebra fear.

After 50 yrs I’m finally understanding algebra thanks to this wonderfully created hands on app. When I took algebra in college I would have continued taking other harder maths if I could comprehend it like I do using this app. Kudos to the developer!
