User Reviews

Overall, reviewers praise the magazine for rigorous, science-based analysis and its portable library of back issues. The app is seen as reader-friendly and thought-provoking, valuable for education. However, stability and UX issues undermine the experience: frequent startup crashes, problematic Pocket Mag billing, missing annotation tools (bookmarks/highlights), no memory of last-read position, and infrequent new issues. Addressing these would align the app’s solid content with a smoother, more feature-complete reading experience.
Pros
  • High-quality science-based analysis and skeptical perspectives that challenge beliefs.
  • Easy access to a full library with back issues on a mobile device.
  • Thought-provoking content that encourages critical thinking beyond mainstream narratives.
  • User-friendly interface with features like a reader view for comfortable reading.
  • Valuable resource for education and scientific literacy.
Cons
  • Frequent app crashes on startup, hindering reading.
  • Pocket Magazine subscription charges and unsubscribe difficulties.
  • Missing bookmarking/highlighting annotation features.
  • Lack of last-read position memory, causing you to lose track of progress.
  • Not enough new issues released frequently; desire for more content.

This magazine used to be a beacon for nuanced un-biased perspectives on scientific thinking about the world. Now it's just political anti-woke nonsense. The articles just blame the political left for all surrounding mistrust in our institutions without articulating the rights role which = bias. Shermer also let conservative authors write anti-abortion articles that aren't science based (which is the point of the publication). Sorry Shermer, but you have lost your way.

I do find it amazing that this, and many other digital reading Apps, can’t seem to remember what page I last read or even what was the last issue I was reading! This is just simply laziness or indifference.
