User Reviews

MIDI Designer Pro X is lauded for power, flexibility, and live-use versatility, plus strong support and value. However, recurring issues include crashes and instability, a controversial shift to subscription pricing, and UX frustrations like a non-intuitive UI and scaling/template clutter. Some users view the UI as aging or neglected. Despite negatives, many power users rely on it for deep MIDI control and complex setups, valuing the ongoing developer support and active community.
Pros
  • Extremely powerful, highly customizable MIDI controller that works across Mac, iPad, and various hardware setups, enabling complex control surfaces.
  • Strong live-performance capabilities and workflow support for Ableton, pedals, and modular rigs, including pedalboard integration and features like accelerometer/snap-to-value.
  • Active, responsive developer with helpful support and a large, engaged user community; frequent updates and a growing library of layouts and templates.
  • Excellent value for money with upgrades and features retained for existing users after updates (no immediate subscription for those who purchased previously).
  • Broad hardware compatibility and the ability to unlock potential in older synths and organ setups, enabling flexible, remote control of diverse gear.
Cons
  • Stability issues: crashes and occasional shutdowns across iOS versions and devices, including after updates.
  • Subscription model controversy: concerns about moving to a subscription and perceived changes to previously purchased functionality.
  • Non-intuitive, cluttered UI with navigation difficulties (hard to back out of screens) and tutorials that are not very helpful.
  • UI/template scaling problems: cluttered templates and poor scaling across iPad sizes, contributing to an aged or abandoned feel for some users.
  • Some device/OS-specific reliability concerns (e.g., performance on certain iPhones and intermittent issues) that affect consistency.

Ridiculously overpriced. Not useful without paying. Subscriptions in general are bs. Lifetime is $150…

Works well on my Mac mini M1 with macOS 15.x. Perfect for all kinds of MIDI work. Mostly use it for pedal controls and presets. Customer service is responsive and helpful. Thanks

My home studio is guitar focused and I need to be able to control multiple modelers, pedals, and DAW functionality without a lot of tap-dancing and context switching. MD allows me to configure the controls I need all in one place and control it from one iPad. MD so far is looking like a game-changer for me.
