Features & Capabilities

  • Oregon and Washington tsunami evacuation zone maps developed by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) and the Washington Department of Natural Resources (WADNR)
  • NVS Tsunami app developed by the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS)

NVS Tsunami provides you an at-a-glance view of where the tsunami hazard zones are along the Oregon and Washington coast, and allows you to map whether your home, work, school, etc. is located in a tsunami evacuation zone or not. To help you develop and plan your own evacuation routes, NVS Tsunami enables you to save your current position or points of interest via GPS or address look-up.

As an important tool in preparing for a potentially catastrophic local or distant tsunami event for residents or visitors to the Pacific Northwest coast, NVS Tsunami also displays the locations of places that will be of critical importance prior to, during, and following a tsunami event, including schools, bridges, assembly areas, and various local government buildings.

Features:

o Up-to-date tsunami information published by Washington and Oregon state agencies and emergency managers, including evacuation zone maps, location of features of interest, and additional tsunami information for the public o Access to the most current tsunami warning bulletins from the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center o Find a location by either address or GPS

User Reviews

Users praise accurate, up-to-date tsunami hazard maps for OR/WA, evacuation routes, and planning features like location markers. They value the science-based content, ease of use, and the ability to receive tsunami alert texts. However, recurring concerns focus on unreliable alerts and too many non-threatening notifications, plus requests for better customization of notification types. Other frequent issues include maintenance and compatibility problems (older iOS versions, iPad support), broken links, and occasional bugs or crashes. Overall, the app is seen as potentially life-saving but needs improved reliability and user controls.
Pros
  • Up-to-date, authoritative tsunami hazard maps for Oregon and Washington, including inundation zones, evacuation routes, high ground, and assembly areas.
  • Planning-friendly features such as entering an address or current location as a map marker and centering the map on your location to plan routes.
  • Tsunami alert texts and fast notifications that can improve timely awareness.
  • Easy-to-use interface with clear, trustworthy information and well-presented mapping.
  • Perceived potential to save lives by providing science-based risk information for coastal residents and visitors.
Cons
  • Alerts can be unreliable or out of sync with official warnings, including false all-clear situations.
  • Non-threatening alerts for distant earthquakes lead to notification fatigue; users want filtering.
  • Limited notification controls; need distance-based filtering and ability to mute non-threat alerts (and audible controls).
  • Maintenance/compatibility issues: not updated for newer iOS versions, poor iPad support, and occasional bugs or crashes.
  • Some data/resources (brochures) or map features are inconsistent or slow, with issues like broken links or slow map redraw.

I would give it a 5, but during the last tsunami warning, the app falsely gave the all clear for about half an hour, even though on tsunami.gov the warning was still in effect. The app came back up with the warnings again after about 30 minutes or so. In that 30 minutes we decided not to evacuate. Luckily the tsunami was still way out at sea, and several hours until it would make landfall. We ended up evacuating. This was my most trusted app, and now I’m not so sure.

In emergency management we always tell people to have multiple ways to get credible information and alerts. So glad this resource exists to have tsunami information in the palm of my hands.
