User Reviews

Air Matters shows strong data depth (pollutant breakdown, historical data) and solid Apple Watch/widget support with a clean UI. However, its issues are recurring: a controversial subscription model and price hikes, doubts about data accuracy and transparency, pollen data inconsistencies, location management bugs, and occasional stability/UI problems. Overall, deep data and device integration are positives, but pricing and reliability are major drawbacks.
Pros
  • Offers detailed AQI data with pollutant breakdown (PM2.5, PM10, O3) and shows what drives the AQI.
  • Provides historical data for multiple locations going back years.
  • Strong Apple Watch integration and functional home screen widgets.
  • Clean, readable UI with actionable recommendations based on the data.
  • Fast access to air quality information, quicker than opening the Weather app.
Cons
  • Switch to a subscription model with price increases (e.g., $0.99/year) and removal of previously purchased apps.
  • Data accuracy and transparency concerns: readings can diverge from other sources, may lag, and data sources are not always clear (including references to government sites).
  • Pollen data methodology is unclear and often inconsistent with local readings.
  • Location management bugs: inability to add/save locations, locations disappearing after updates (e.g., iOS 17), and other location-related issues.
  • Stability and UI reliability problems: occasional crashes on launch, confusing UI changes (e.g., search/dropdown), and reliability issues with data presentation.

Air quality data in China is often unreliable, but the numbers in this app are generally the most accurate when compared to other data sources, my personal air quality sensor, and visibility. The app also offers historical data for different locations going back years, which is super helpful to see changes over time.
